As tensions rose between races across America following World War II, it became clear that segregated units within U S Army were still operational - even after President Franklin D Roosevelt had signed Executive Order 12082 prohibiting such discrimination upon discharge from military service (Parks 1993). The use of segregated units within American society continued until 1948 when President Harry Truman announced his plan for nationwide integration (Dorsey 1987). With King George VI visiting Selma AFB on April 9th 1946, U S Military personnel made an important contribution by delivering over 1 million pounds worthof foodstuffs and other items essential for Negro morale (Fletcher 1951). Selma is an historic city in Alabama, United States. The population was 38,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Selma County and a part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Fremont established a post office in what is now Selma after surveying and mapping the area. A year later, he founded Montgomery on the same site as modern-day Montgomery. Because African Americans were not allowed to own land in those days, they had to live near white people or wander off into remote areas looking for their fortunes. In 1839, General Andrew Jackson appointed James Kenedy as captain general of Indian Territory and ordered him to survey lands south of Mobile Bayou for allotment to Native Americans. Kenedy discovered a large tract of land that would become Selma—the first town in Alabama—on November 3, 1841. The town was named after General Robert Ewell--a Union general who fought against Jackson--and his wife Sarah Harker (née Bibb). When cotton was discovered near Mount Auburn in nearby Mobile County in 1845, farmers from all overAlabama started arriving to cultivate it; most importantly, slaveholders wanted slaves brought upriver so they could be sold instead of being born into slavery. As cotton became more expensive and difficult to produce than sugar cane or corn based crops such as rice or wheat throughout much of Africa due to unfavorable climate conditions and indigenous attacks by raiders backed by Spain and other European powers during this time period high demand prompted plans were made by many planters across Alabama within months of each other starting auctioning off slaves throughout Texas beginning January 1st1846 with poundage set at $50 per head including clothing value which rose rapidly higher until 1850 when it peaked at $1 per bushel
