The Scottsboro Boys were found guilty of raping a white girl in 1957 and sentenced to death. Scottsboro had a post office from 1881 until it closed in 1954. A store called "The Mrs.'s Store" was located on Main Street in Scottsboro from 1861-1881. A school opened in 1861 called "Plymouth Academy." Pennsylvania Railroad tracks passed through Scottsboro on north-south routes for many years before being removed in the early 1900s; however, evidence suggests that some black students may have walked or ridden the trains to school there during this time. According to local historian Forrest Hargrave, when the railroad came through town “black people worked along it all day long picking cotton and other things like that” but “no one ever said anything about it because no one cared then as much as they do now... They didn’t know any better than we did about what was going on down there!” On July 26th 1907 (the date Preston Youngblood disappeared), his little sister Daisy died suddenly while playing outside her home just south of town limits; her brother Clyde Youngblood immediately notified Sheriff Payne of this suspicious event and Payne took appropriate measures including ordering an investigation into Daisy's death despite objections from family friends who felt responsibility should be borne by Preston's father instead. This lead directly to indictments against three men - Clyde Youngblood (who would go on to receive a life sentence), Preston Youngblood Jr., and Jeptha Mayo - all three sons of Daisy's deceased husband - for first degree murder without lawful justification within two months following her tragic death which also left behind four young children orphaned overnight… All these charges could have been dropped if proper authorities had been alerted about what happened that night! However due diligence wasn't exercised at either law enforcement level or with regards to evidentiary searches done during their investigations subsequent prosecutions ensueddespite letters written by Attorney General John F Kennedy warning both sheriff Payne and district attorney William Denny not to pursue indictments based upon circumstantial evidence only available at trial… District Attorney Denny personally intervened on behalf of both sheriffs when he learned information suggesting national media might be interested in story .
