Saraland is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The town started as a small community near what is now Tuscaloosa and was named after Saraland River on the border of that township and Lowndes County. In 1881, when Alabama became a state, Saraland Cove was chosen as its capital. The first courthouse in Saraland was built in 1882. In 1885, the town received land from Lowndes County to become its own municipality; it had a population of about 120 people then. The first post office in Saraland opened in 1886. By 1912, the population had grown to about 350 people and included 30 businesses; by 1916 it had reached 900 people and included 60 businesses. In 1932, during World War II, Saraland became an airfield for the United States Army Air Forces Eighth Air Force Base at Homestead-Miami Speedway; it remained an active military facility untilactivated on September 15th 1975. After World War II ended hostilities in Europe there were few opportunities for economic growth so business conditions declined until they returned with some activity starting around 1980 through 1990 due to two waves of immigration: Mexican workers who brought their skills with them while working off season jobs (the "season" being summertime) employed by American companies which would send them back home for Christmas or Easter before going back into service again during winter months; and African Americans who found work picking cotton or other agricultural activities during the long hot summers days off from school or work because there were no other opportunities available to them outside those working in agriculture or professions related to agriculture such as law enforcement or First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt's personal maids doing odd jobs for her while she vacationed at nearby Tuskegee UniversitySome Hispanic entrepreneurs also established themselves early on within Saraland’s boundaries through taking up various trucking services that transported goods between points east of Montgomery and points west of Mobile Bayou but this rapidly went outmoded as truck traffic increased along I-5 more than doubled due to new interstate construction including lanes well wide open for large trucks making deliveries daily without needing a detour
