Saraland is a small town located in Baldwin County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,876 at the 2010 census. Saraland is part of the Mobile-Tensaw-Bayou Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Saraland was founded by Native Americans in 1824. It was named for General George A. Washington Saratoga and his army during the American Revolution. By 1828, the town had been renamed for Commodore John D'Urville who had helped establish Mobile as a major trading port on the Gulf of Mexico. In 1829, Commodore D'Urville laid out a town square which still stands today and built two churches and three schools in what is now known as downtown Saraland. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell called on citizens of Mobile to rise up against the Union forces besieging their city before they could be destroyed entirely. Many men from Saraland joined Ewell's forces and became known as "the volunteers." When Confederate troops sacked Mobile on April 9th, 1861, many residents of Saraland took refuge inside the old fortifications near Fort Morgan. Some estimates say that up to 80% of all native Alabamians within three miles ofMobile perished during this attack numbering some 10,000 people according to historian Samuel Ziegler Jr.. Following the Civil War, local businesses began to reopen and new families were moved into what is now downtown Saraland from neighboring towns such as Atmore and Milton due to its close proximity to Mobile Bayou and easy access to transportation including ferries from Mobile Bayou Landing into downtown SARALAND! On November 1st 1927/ 1928 Mayor Alfred Horry dedicated The First Baptist Church which seated 300 people capacity with an overflow audience seating 100 more spectators outside! This building still stands today adjacent to The First National Bank building! On October 15th 1977 saraland celebrated it’s centennial with a “Festival Of Festivals” attended by local dignitaries including US Senator Huey Long who officiated at a luncheon celebrating cultural diversity hosted by then Municipal Judge John Laddington Sr., mayor Donnie Ingram (now Representative Elijah Cummings) keynote speaker Dr JB Priesthood singer Patsy Cline; parade consisting of floats decorated with colorful fabric banners displaying patriotic slogans throughout town; civic event featuring reparation dance demonstration led by Mrs Fannie Beavers grandson Jimmy Beavers programmable lighted marquees erected throughout various Corners Park areas proclaiming special events being staged there during each phase; band played live music nightly at several bars until late hours culminating with fireworks display over downtown SARALAND

Saraland is a small town in Baldwin County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Mobile–Troy–Baldwin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Baptist missionaries in 1881 and named for Saraland Parish, Louisiana. The first post office was established in 1882. The community had a population of just under 100 before it merged with neighboring Palestine to form Baldwin County in 1907. During World War II, Saraland played an important role as a training ground for enlistees from nearby Mobile and Montgomery counties. On July 20, 1944, General Dwight D. Eisenhower conducted his final military review of the war at Saraland High School before he left to head back to Europe aboard USS Missouri (BB-63). In 1951 the school board voted to close the high school and merge it with Palestine Junior/Senior High School which had been open since 1922; however, this merger did not take place because Palestine closed its doors one year later due to financial troubles A new high school was built in 1997 on the site of what used to be Saraland Elementary School; it is now known as Palestine Middle/High School and has a enrollment of over 900 students. In 2006 SARALAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT NO 2 applied for ANDERSON COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLMASTERY status and will become SARALAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT 3 Today Saraland is home to many businesses including a Walmart Supercenter as well as several restaurants and services which include churches, doctor's offices etc
The Saraland, Alabama community began as a small settlement on the Chattahoochee River in 1836. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who had been U.S. president at the time. The first white settlers were Major John Hargrave and his family, who arrived in 1837. In 1840, Captain George Armstrong erected the first permanent structure in Saraland - a log cabin called " Armstrong's Cabin." In 1849, surveyor Jacob Loring built the first schoolhouse in Saraland. By 1860, there were nine houses in Saraland; three of which are still standing today. A post office was established within Saraland in 1865; and by 1870, there were thirty-six residents living there. In 1871, saraland voters passed a resolution requesting that the Cherokee Nation be recognized as an Indian tribe within Alabama; this request was not honored though Georgia granted tribal status to the Creek nation two years later. In 1901, fire destroyed most of the buildings within Saraland but no one was killed or hurt as a result. In 1915-16, new buildings were constructed along Second Street between First and Third Streets; these structures remain standing today (though they have been remodeled many times).
