Saraland is an unincorporated community in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. The population was 379 as of the 2010 census. It is located on U.S. Route 90 east of downtown Pensacola. The land that Saraland stands on was first patented to slaves in 1824 by John Wilkinson and James McMullen. The name "Saraland" means "land of salt." The town was so named because the salt springs were found near the present-day town site. In 1838, a post office was established at Saraland and it remained in operation until 1959. In 1830, Captain William Bledsoe founded Fort Walton Beach on Mobile Bay and built a fortification there which he called Fort Brooke (later renamed Fort Brooke). He also developed what is now known as Sarasota County, Florida along with his partners James McMullen and John Wilkinson. On November 3, 1830, Mobile County became part of Escambia County when it was organized from portions of Duval and Alachua counties. In 1836, Colonel Abel Stroud erected a blockhouse at Saraland which served as a jail for county prisoners during the Mexican–American War. 2 miles north of present-day Saraland on US 90 is a State Historical Park which contains many interesting items about the history of this area

As people began to dream of traveling to Mars or other far-off places, they realized that they needed a way to keep track of their whereabouts while they were away from home.
