The United States Navy has a long and proud history in Prichard, Alabama. From its humble beginnings as the Mobile Naval Hospital during World War II to becoming one of the largest and most powerful navies in the world today, the navy has always been a part of our community. One of the first naval institutions in Prichard was the Mobile Naval Hospital, which opened in 1942 on land leased from local farmers. The hospital was soon providing care for sailors from all over Southeast Asia and Europe who were being treated at various military hospitals across America. In 1945, when World War II ended, Mobile Naval Hospital transitioned into the United States Navy as part ofOperation Neptune's Spear. The hospital played an important role in support of US troops throughout Europe until Germany's surrender on May 8, 1945. With war ending came new challenges for the navy. To provide maintenance and operations for its growing fleet of ships and submarines, it was necessary to find new locations to house them. One such location was Prichard – a small town located just outside Montgomery County on Alabama’s eastern shore. With its ample fishing resources and access to navigable rivers and waterways, Prichard became home to one of America’s first naval airfields during World War II. It also served as a vital transportation hub for goods arriving through nearbyMobile Bayou and Blackwater River Valley Railroad system; this allowed goods moving between ports along the Gulf Coast to move freely through American airspace without having to be inspected or clearance required from Washington D.C.–thus saving Allied shipping considerable time and money . However, during the late 19th century Prichard struggled with several economic setbacks. In addition, racial tensions arose increasingly throughout the city due to its high concentrations of African Americans and white people of other races. This led to increased violence and social unrest which further deteriorated during the 1920s when prohibition policies were enacted in Alabama. Consequently, Prichard lost many of its key industrial and commercial leaders during this time period. However, over time downtown has regained some of its former prominence as a popular tourist destination.
Prichard, Alabama was originally founded in 1819 by William Prichard and his wife Ann. The town was named after the then-new Prichard County, Kentucky. William Prichard had come to the area from Lexington, Kentucky in 1814 as a surveyor for the United States government. He arrived in what is now eastern Alabama and began mapping out the territory that would become Alabama. In 1818, he patented a land grant to his brother John Prichard, who also came from Lexington. The two brothers divided the land among themselves and started farms around centralAlabama. By 1830, they had built a small village on the north side of navigable Mobile Bayou which they named Prichardville after their father and home state of Kentucky. In 1836, when Andrew Jackson became president of the United States, he selected this location as one of his inaugural Ulysses S. Grant'sasesidentship grants to create new counties in Alabama. In 1840, he designated Prichardville as part of Etowah County; it remained an incorporated municipality until it merged with Montgomery County in 1968
