The national guard was first organized in Alabama on November 15, 1861. It was not until January 6, 1862 when the state legislature authorized federal funding for the Guard to be used to protect the state’s citizens. The first units of the Guard were raised in Prichard on December 5, 1861. The Guard was organized into companies and brigades and had a strength of about 1,000 men. On March 15, 1865, President Andrew Johnson signed an act authorizing the disbandment of all United States military forces in Alabama except for Company D of the National Guardsman from Mobile County which continued to serve until 1866. On May 3rd 1866, Company D disbanded at Hartsville after serving for six years with distinction. In 1898 Congress passed an appropriation Act providing that all members of Unit 2 (National Guardsmen) who had served since September 11th 1865 be paid their full benefits as members of any other organization or corps within the army or navy then existing in Alabama. This law also provided that any soldier discharged by reason of wounds received while serving withUnit 2 or later would automatically become a member thereof and receive his full benefits under existing law including death benefit if he survived such discharge. As a result of this appropriation Act and amendments thereto Units 2 through 4 became part of Battery A (Alabama) and Battery B (Alabama) respectively on April 1st 1899 when those batteries were reactivated at Fort Barrancas following its abandonment two years earlier due to lack of funds. These organizations remain active today as part of Army Forces Command’s Brigade Combat Team 1-101 (Alaska).
