Prichard, Alabama is a small town located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 1,821 at the 2000 census. It lies on the edge of the Tombigbee Valley and is bordered by Pulaski County to the east, Marengo County to the north, and Ozark County to the west. The first residents of Prichard were farmers who arrived in 1819. A post office was established in 1824 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store opened in 1829 and operated for three years. The first school was built in 1830 and served grades one through twelve. In 1858, a railroad was constructed through Prichard and soon several businesses sprung up around it including a hotel, lumberyard, grocery store, cotton gin, brewery, farm implement dealership and seed dispensary. In 1902-1903 an important event occurred which has been cited as being instrumental in making Prichard a thriving center of commerce: the construction of US Highway 231 which connected Prichard with Mobile Bayou on the north side of Mobile City then known as Anniston Junction. This highway helped spur development along what is now Third Street between US Highway 231st Avenue East (now Fort Payne Road) and US 21st Avenue West (now Old State Road). Also during this time period another road construction project took place which had an even more significant impact on Prichard: King's Chapel Road became motorists' access route from Memphis down into central Jeff Davis County from east Tennessee via FM 2705 (Nashville Pike). During World War II many local men served their country within the army or navy; among these men are four natives of Prichard who enlisted in 1942: Warren Naylor Jr., James Meeks III, Leroy Greene Sr.,and Melvin Watts Jr.. Three brothers also enlisted - Leroy Greene Sr., Melvin Watts Jr., Warren Naylor Jr.- all eventually received medals for their service while living locally:Warren Naylor Jr.'s medal can be seen at Montgomery Municipal Airport today; Melvin Watts Jr.'s possessions still remain at his home on Third Street near Kings Chapel Rd.; Leroy Greene Sr.'s remains are interred at Pleasant Grove Cemetery just outside town limits
