Prattville is a town in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 7,940 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mobile County. Prattville is located on the Gulf coast and has been known for its seafood since pre-colonial days. The town was founded by Captain John Pratt in 1824 as Hull's Landing on an artificial island created by means of dredging during the severe winters of that year. The name "Prattville" was chosen because it lay just south of where Hull's Landing had been built and it interfered with no other place in America so much as it did with Pensacola, Florida, to which Hull had sent his family for refuge after being shipwrecked onshore while exploring Spanish Florida. Hull's Landing became a standard port for ships visiting Mobile Bay and also served as a stopping point on their way between Pensacola and New Orleans de la Cruz, Louisiana; thence they went to Texas and California. From here many traders extended their operations into what is now Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky et al., before finally reaching Mexico City in 1848 via New Orleans de la Cruz. In 1870 Captains Charles Henson (1829-1907), Hiram Ivey (1837-1920) and Augustus Crain (1840-1923) each established plantations near present day Prattville about one mile from where they first landed commercial crops but abandoned them after only a few years due to lack of rainfall or disease available from those parts of the world experiences having citrus fruits as main crop instead relying mostly upon sugar cane production down there then back up home in Europe etc.). Prattville is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Birmingham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Prattville was James Hanks. He and his family arrived from Kentucky in 1819 and built a log cabin on the east side of the creek that now forms its name. In 1830, Rufus Cuthbert bought land adjacent to where Hanks' cabin stood and began building a sawmill on the stream that ran through Prattville. In 1852, John Ladd purchased some more land near Prattville from Rufus Cuthbert and started building a cotton gin on what is now Court Street. This early cotton gin helped spur development in Prattville as it produced high-quality cloth for local retailers and consumers across southeast Alabama. The first store in Prattville opened its doors in 1857 and soon became one of the most successful businesses in town. By 1860, when white settlement began expanding rapidly into central Alabama following the American Civil War, Prattville had developed into an important community with several stores, two schools (one public and one private), a post office, six churches (three Baptist/ Methodist/ Episcopal and three Presbyterian), four hotels/boardinghouses/motels, two churches being used as movie theaters (the First Baptist Church which played movies until 1957)and two blacksmiths shops - both operated by African Americans - making it one of the most segregated towns in central Alabama at this time. A few years later however things changed when Judge David Gossage ordered all white men over eighteen living within five miles of any courthouse to register with him or face arrest for not voting or property ownership; this action led to rapid growth for black residents within central Alabama as they were able to find work opportunities outside their homes while still maintaining their own social structures unique to their race...This influx of new people created new challenges for those already living here including but not limited to: integrating newly acquired resources (landowning whites who had once been sole proprietors or majority holders of properties) intoexisting society while also trying to learn English while interacting with people who spoke other languages fluently; additionally working around difficult court orders limiting black access to education opportunities while also trying To manage finances related directly or indirectly to segregationist Politics & government policies
Prattville is located in Baldwin County, Alabama. The community was named for General John A. Pratt, a general in the Union army during the American Civil War. The community was founded in 1868, and it first grewpopulations were around 100 people at its peak. However, by 1890 population had dwindled to only 10 people and by 1930 population had decreased to 6 residents.
