The Prattville Army Depot was founded in 1917 as the Alabama National Guard Ammunition and Supply Depot. It became the Prattville Army Depot on September 16, 1947 when it was merged with the Alabama National Guard's Mobile Armory to form the Mobile Army Arsenal. The arsenal is now part of Fort Knox National Military Park. The first military deployment at the depot took place in World War I when soldiers from nearby Decatur served in France. In World War II, soldiers from Prattville deployed to Europe and North Africa. During the Korean War, soldiers from Prattville served in South Korea and China. The last military deployment at the depot occurred during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 when troops from Auburn arrived to provide ammunition support for Operation Stressbow. Prattville is an unincorporated community in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,965 at the 2010 census. It is located on U.S. Route 12 south of Montgomery. Prattville has a post office with ZIP code 73501. The community was laid out by James Pratt in 1867 and named for him. It was primarily a agricultural center until the early 20th century when it became a small town with many businesses and residences. The growth of Montgomery and other nearby cities led to the decline of Prattville as a commercial center during the last decades of the 20th century; however, recent development has brought new life to the town while preserving its historical significance. The first settler in Prattville was John Cline who arrived in 1868 from Holcombe County, North Carolina. He built his home near what is now downtown Prattville and ranched land that he donated to the government for public use in exchange for financial assistance during Reconstruction period following Civil War. In 1870, Jno Hargrave came to Prattville from Mobile County, Alabama as part of a group that included Drayton Eames (founder of Tuskegee Institute), Levi Coffin (a lawyer who later served as governor of Alabama), Wm Denny (the founder of Denny's Department Store), and others seeking refuge after being driven out of their homes by Confederate forces during the war years . Hargrave soon became involved in local politics serving as mayor from 1871-1875 and 1880-1882 before moving on to become Mayor of Mobile at age 56 years old making him oneOf America's oldest mayors at that time . Eventually Hargrave sold his property within town limits to George Aiken who platted what is today downtown Prattville - which began as an area dense with hickory trees - along Second Street between Broad Avenue and Biddle Road on December 21st 1865 under the name "Downtown lots No 1" Aiken conducted business meetings at his home there until January 1889 when he moved operationselin g into what is now called First Baptist Church across Second Street from Underwood House which served as HQ until 1905 when it burned down due to arson . Aiken then leased space inside First Baptist Church until October 1912 when he opened up his own storeroom adjacent to current day Third Street where he continued operate tenement buildings until 1917 when he closed his business permanently due to World War I shortages; coincidentally this building still stands vacant today next door! From 1917-1920 Aiken also managed Grady Hospital which functioned both hospital and mental health care facility for patients living within city limits prior to its absorption into Universityhospital system two years later! Downtown lots Nos 1 through 3 were eventually sold off again becoming residential developments beginning around 1920s although some remain extant including Gadsden Mall which opened up in 1984 just blocks away! After WWII most residents moved away or lost interest in permanent housing so few remains today except Trinity Episcopal church across Third Street
