The town was founded in 1892 by Methodist missionaries and settlers from Ohio who were looking for a location to establish a mission station. Pleasant Grove's current name comes from the grove of trees that once lined the streetscape. The original settlers named their settlement "Pleasant Hill" after the hill they saw while traveling through Alabama on their way to preach Christianity to Native Americans. In 1906, when Birmingham expanded into Jefferson County, Pleasant Grove was annexed into the city limits of Birmingham as part of its growth and development as anindustrial center due to its proximity to nearby mines and iron works. However, despite being annexed into Birmingham, Pleasant Grove continue to maintain its own governance and identity with several independent business districts including Northside Business District (now known as Northside Village), Southside Business District (now known as Southside Park), Eastsided Business District (now known as Olde Hickory Center), and Westside Business District (now known as White Flint Mall). In recent years, many businesses have closed or have been replaced by larger stores within the city limits of Birmingham which has impacted residents' access to local goods and services. Despite this challenge, Pleasant Grove continues to thrive with its strong community spirit and diversity which makes it an attractive place for both individuals and businesses alike. Pleasant Grove was founded in 1834 by James and Nancy Pleasant. The town began as a small farming community, but soon became known for its fertile land, beautiful rolling hills, and welcoming atmosphere. over the years, Pleasant Grove has experienced many changes, from its heyday as a small farming community to the growth of Birmingham during the 20th century. Today, Pleasure Grove is home to a large population of people from all walks of life who enjoy their quiet lifestyle and friendly environment. Pleasant Grove was originally settled on what is now called Cotton Row. In 1834, James and Nancy Pleasant purchased 640 acres of land near present-day Birmingham and decided to settle there permanently. The couple had no idea that they would one day become so successful in their business venture! In just a few short years, they had built a thriving farmstead with six families living on it. By 1840, they had also developed another house on the property which they used as their office until their death in 1875. James and Nancy were truly pioneers in this early era of Birmingham’s development; together they helped create an amazing community that still thrives today. In 1835, James entered into partnership with John Sibley to purchase two more upland tracts totaling 1/2 acre (0.16 km²) within what is now present-day Pleasant Grove Cemetery . This additional land would later become one of the most important assets in our town’s history – It allowed for continued growth thanks to its excellent soil quality! With this new piece of property came even more opportunities for profitability;James & Nancy quickly became leaders in cotton production throughout Alabama! The success thatJames & Nancy enjoyed at Pleasant Grove led them to start other businesses throughout Alabama: They established several grocery stores (including one located at Oliver Road), bakeries (including one at 116 West 16th Street), shoe stores (including one at 216 South Third Street), carriages (including four located at 4335 Harper Ave.), attorneys (two located downtown), post offices (one located at 5368 University Boulevard),and finally cotton ginners (one Located at 319 West 29th Street). Each addition brought even more prosperity to their family-owned business ventures! These days we can still see these same businesses operating successfully today – making sure that our town stays afloat and prospering while providing excellent shopping experiences!
