Phenix City, Alabama is a small city located in the Shoals region of central Alabama. It is named for the Phenix River, which forms the town's eastern border. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Phenix City were French explorers who explored and traveled through this area in 1701-02. In 1836, General John C. Shelby arrived here from Tennessee as part of his effort to create a westward expansion for the Confederate States of America. He built a wagon road from Mobile to Huntsville and named it after himself – Shelby County (now Alabamian counties). When Union forces advanced into southern Alabama during the American Civil War, they discovered that much of this area had been abandoned by its original occupants due to lack of food or water supplies. The Union troops began occupying buildings and Wadyssee Trading Post on January 12, 1865 while Confederate forces were still living in these areas. A few weeks later, General Robert Ewell’s Army attacked Union lines near Chattanooga and captured many prisoners including General Shelby and his aides. Aftermath of the war led to an increased demand for goods brought into Confederate territory by traders from nearby states such as Georgia and South Carolina – which caused prices for goods exported out of Alabama to increase significantly. This situation led Governor James Mays to issue an executive order on April 10, 1865 ordering all rebel stores within three miles of state lines closed until further notice; this action was followed by similar orders from other state officials throughout southeastern Alabama following Confederate capitulation on May 4th evening at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.) As part of Reconstruction efforts following Reconstruction in America (1865-1877), many white southerners returned home or emigrated north where they created new communities such as Phenix City based on their nostalgia for "the old days." The first black residents moved intophenixcity around 1900 when cotton acreage became available in that area after some plantations were burned down during yellow fever epidemics back east. Phenix City was founded in 1818 by James E. Watkins and his wife Eliza Price. The town was named for a local tree, the Phenix or Indian oak, which had a large red fruit that was eaten by the natives. Watkins built the first store and post office in the town in 1825. The first physician in Phenix City was Dr. John C. Maynard from Mobile, Alabama who served from 1827 to 1830. In 1830, Watkins sold his share of the town to Elijah Bledsoe and moved to Huntsville with his family. In 1840, Watkins again sold his share of the town to Elijah Bledsoe and moved to Decatur, Alabama with his family where he died in 1849.
