Phenix City is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The name "Phenix City" is likely derived from the Choctaw word "pha-niksi," meaning "place of many trees." The first settler in Phenix City was James Fenton who arrived in 1826 and named his new town after his native Phenix Creek in Scotland. In 1837, John Witherspoon settled in what is now Phenix City and named it for himself. By 1840, most of present day Marshall County had been organized. William Cushing opened a ferry service from Meridian to Phenix City on March 4, 1841 which served as an important connection between the two counties. In 1851, General Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and ordered all military stores destroyed throughout the country including those located in Jackson County; however,phenix city remained unscathed. This order was rescinded after Jackson's death on April 12 that year. On May 15th1851 Phebe Clay founded the first post office within present day Marshall County when she received mail from Huntsville through her house on Uptown Street just north of Maxwell Street On October 25th1856 Donelson Coleman set up a flour mill at mickelsonville (now part of downtown Phenix City). Coleman's mill continued to operate until 1907 when it burned down due to a bad fire starter design. After that time there were few physical changes to phenix city until World War II when numerous factories were built nearby including aluminum smelters and other heavy industries that have left their mark on downtown PhenixCity still today Today downtown Phenix City remains one of the most vibrant areas withinMarshall county with several popular nightlife venues such as The Masquerade & Gambler's Inn as well as several high-end restaurants and bars which continue to draw visitors into this historic community

Phenix City was founded in 1859 by James H.H. Peacock and other investors. The town grew quickly, becoming the largest in Alabama during the early 1800s. The population of Phenix City peaked at 25,000 in the 1860s, but decreased as immigration from Europe increased. By 1870, Phenix City had a population of only 6 people. However, the town's growth continued until 1865 when a severe storm destroyed much of downtown and killed many people. The storm also left behind an area known as "The Black Hole." This hole is now closed off to traffic and is used for storage by the city government. During Reconstruction, phenix city became an important center for black Americans in Alabama due to its status as a white-majority town. In 1875, African Americans formed a local political organization called the Grand Army of Labor (GAL) to support themselves after being denied voting rights by state officials. The GAL helped build schools and businesses in Phenix City during this time period. In 1898, phenix city experienced another significant event when it became home to Birmingham's first black school district (the first in Alabama). This event contributed to further integration of American society intophenix city during this time period. Additionally, phenix city played an important role during World War II when it served as a munitions production plant for Midland Arsenal located 15 miles north of the town
