Phenix City is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 21,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County. Phenix City is located near the confluence of the Tombigbee and Flint rivers. The area around Phenix City was settled by English colonists in 1796 and named for General James Wilkinson who had died within days of landing in Mobile Bay on July 24, 1796. Wilkinson's body was brought ashore at what is now Phenix City and interred there with other members of his unit in a small mausoleum built on land donated by local farmer Elijah Whitehead. The town began as just one house on Main Street until 1802 when it became known as "Fenton" after Major John Fenton, commander of British forces during the Creek War (1813-1816). In 1834, an act was passed by Congress which designated Jefferson County as "Jefferson County Reserve" to be used for purposes such as military training and recruitment for US troops under the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). As part of this reservation, many early settlers were required to leave their homes and move into barracks or tents on government land near downtown Phenix City. When hostilities ended in 1848, most settlers returned to their homes except for a few who continued to live on government property until after Reconstruction when they again moved into their own homes. By 1870, all but one block on Main Street had been sold or mortgaged off and development stopped short due to lack of money from investors interested in properties closer to downtown where businesses could grow larger and draw more customers than outlying farms could provide. In 1907, construction began on what would become known as courthouse square which included the present day jail building along with a number of other buildings including schools (now Community College), post office annexe/mail room/patio hall/field house (now First Baptist Church) and garage. This project was completed three years later and served as courthouse until 1915 when court House Square was destroyed by fire which also destroyed several other nearby buildings including schoolhouse No 2 which still stands today
