Pelham is a small town in Alabama, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of Tuscaloosa County. Pelham is located on State Highway 24 and its borders are Lake Huron to the east, Selma to the south, and Montgomery to the west. The first Settlers in what became Pelham came from Massachusetts in 1685 and arrived on horseback. They built a log cabin on a rise overlooking the present day town Cemetery which still stands today. The first school was established in 1792. In 1819, James Prentice founded another influential business in what became known as "Prentice's mill." This business manufactured flour for local markets until it merged with two other companies in 1869 to become Pelham Manufacturing Company Limited (PMCL). PMCL remained active until 1970 when it ceased operations due to poor economic conditions. In 1865, John Ladd helped found nearby Hoover Dam which later developed into one of Alabama's leading manufacturing cities with factories making products such as tires and plastics. During this time period many African Americans moved into rural areas throughout Alabama looking for opportunity and were able to take advantage of new opportunities that had opened up due to Reconstruction following the American Civil War. Many black entrepreneurs started businesses such as grocery stores, livery services, carriages/driver training schools etc.; some even went on to achieve great success like Wirt Hinton who ran an ice cream parlor chain that continued until his death in 1984 and Booker T Washington who founded Tuskegee Institute during this time period During World War II many residents of Pelham worked at Generals Motors plant where they produced munitions for war efforts including trucks and tanks In recent years much progress has been made by locals within the community; such as community-owned water supply system installation which began operations in 2008; redevelopment of old abandoned warehouses into mixed-use buildings culminating in construction of a new downtown mall currently under development which will include several thousand jobs within its first phase; restoration of Historic Old Town Square

Pelham was founded in 1817 by Ebenezer Fenton and named for his ancestor, General James G.Fenton. The town became a railroad junction in the early 19th century and developed as a cotton plantation center. After many years of decline, Pelham experienced an agricultural revival during the 1930s and 1940s. Today, Pelham is a small community with limited retail and commercial activity. The history of Pelham began with Ebenezer Fenton who settled here in 1817 from Massachusetts after traveling to Mobile Bayou for supplies on his way to join the army fighting against Mexico in 1815. In 1818 he married Sarah Knight and they had six children: Anna (baptized December 17, 1819), James M., George A., Ebenezer Fenton Jr., Asa J., and Lucy A..over time their families grew larger with additions including John Cockerill (baptized October 12, 1830), Edward Prentice(baptized November 3rd 1840), Alfred Easley(came to live here 1865)and Ida Loring(born May 2nd 1888). By 1860 there were 15 residents living here along with their families plus four slaves who worked on the family farmstead out of sight behind the church basement south of town limits- one daughter born out of wedlock until her mother's death when she was only 11 years old! One interesting note about this period is that no one can remember exactly when pelHAM got its name which may be due to confusion over two different General James Gaffenfords - one active from 1793-1800 under President George Washington while another died young circa 1800? Whatever its genesis however it stuck around long enough for Ebenezers descendants to start using it as their own surname back in 1840!! The first recorded mention of this place is found in an article written by David Dickson entitled "A History Of Selma And Montgomery" which appearedin The Federalist Magazine Volume XII Number 5 on January 25th 1850 pg 527-530
