The navy has been a major part of Pelham and surrounding communities for centuries. The first military ships were built in the town in 1794. The town was named after Rear Admiral John Pelham, who was Commodore of the Alabama Navy at that time. In 1805, Rear Admiral David Porter founded the navy depot on Bay Street in downtown Pelham. It served as a naval base until 1827 when it moved to Mobile Bay. The navy depot closed in 1850 and was replaced by the present Naval Station Mobile. In 1853, USS Constitution sailed into Mobile Bay for repairs following a collision with USS Quincy off Pensacola Island. In 1865, USS HOUSTON (BB-36) sailed into Mobile Bay following her battle with CSS Savannah off their shared coast off Jacksonville Beach Florida. In 1889, USS SULLIVAN (DD-8) sailed into Mobile Bay to dock with USS Tuscaloosa (CVA-13). She acted as Flagship during ceremonies marking the opening of the Alabama River Bridge connectingMobile and Montgomery Counties. Pelham is a small town located in central Alabama. The population was 3,529 at the 2010 census. It is the only municipality in Pelham County and it is also the county seat of Pelham County. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Pelham were French traders who arrived in 1797. In 1815, General James Wilkinson purchased 1,000 acres of land from the Muscogee Creeks Indians for $2,500. This purchase opened up much of present-day Alabama to white settlement and led to the development of towns such as Selma and Tuscaloosa. In 1821, General Wilkinson founded Pelham Academy which became one of the leading educational institutions in Alabama. He was also a member of the United States Senate from 1827 to 1831 and used his influence to promote Southern independence. After he left office, most businesses in town went out of business because there was no market for their products outside of Alabama. However, some businesses did continue until around 1911 due to demographic changes within Pelham County that had begun happening during this time period: more people were moving into rural areas and more people were marrying outside their ethnic backgrounds (a change that would later lead to increased crime rates). Today, many aspects of life within PelHAM are still dependent on agriculture – such as hay production – which has been an important part of its economy for centuries. The community’s main shopping center is located at downtown where farmers markets are held every Saturday morning since 2006; several restaurants/cafes dot the landscape; schools operate out-of-town daycare facilities; and a number of antique shops exist throughout town.
Pelham was founded in 1819 by Andrew Pelham and his wife, Sarah. The town is named for General James G. Armistead, who fought in the American Civil War. The first post office was opened in 1825. In 1860, Pelham became a county seat of Butler County. In 1871, Pelham incorporated as a city and later renamed it to Auburn.
