Pelham is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 11,599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Flint–Muskegon Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General John Pelham in 1837 as a farming community on the eastern bank of the Muskegon River. The first post office in Pelham opened in 1846. The name "Pelham" came from General John Pelham's home county of Northumberland, England. He had been born there and had served with distinction during the American Revolutionary War and during the Mexican-American War. In 1837, he bought some piece of land east of downtown Muskegon Falls on which he built a small farmstead named "Pelham". He named his new community after his old home county, Northumberland, England. In 1871, Pelham incorporated as a village under the terms of an act approved by the Michigan Legislature. At that time, villages were established to facilitate economic development within their boundaries but remained unincorporated until they became separate municipalities under state law in 1923. The village continued to operate as an unincorporated community until its merger into Muskegon Heights in 1978). On November 6, 1903 (the date also celebrated as Michigan's centennial), pelHAMs merged into Muskegon Heights to form one municipality covering all of Muskegon County including parts of Wayne and Oakland counties northward to Marquette Township and eastward to Bay City Municipal Airport

During the 1960s, Pelham witnessed increasing racial tension in Alabama as African Americans moved into the town from rural areas. This led to several outbreaks of race-based violence that shook Pelham over the next decade or so. By 1974, however, community harmony had returned somewhat after various efforts were made to address underlying tensions.
