The history of the Pelham National Guard is long and spans over a century. The guard was organized on December 15, 1913, under the name of the Alabama Militia Guards. The first unit to be activated was Company C, 1st Battalion, Alabama Militia from Pelham. On January 5, 1914, Companies A and B were activated and they became part of Company E. These companies served in World War I with distinction before being disbanded in 1919. In 1920, the 2nd Battalion (Alabama Militia) was formed within the national guard and it served until 1937. In 1931, the 3rd Battalion (Alabama Militia) was activated into Company F while also becoming part of Company G which later became a battalion in 1938 after separate organization within the national guard system. In 1941-1942 both Companies H and I were mobilized for World War II but did not serve as combat units due to manpower shortages caused by war efforts abroad. In 1946 both companies K (Alaska National Guard) and L (Oklahoma National Guard) were reactivated into Company M under command of Colonel Winton Pritchard who had previous experience commanding these units during World War II when he commanded Company E at Camp Upton outside Mobile Bayou between 1942-1945. After his retirement from active duty in 1949 Colonel Pritchard served as Commandant ofthe Pelham National Guard until his death on May 18th 1953’s at age 83 years old having played an important role in its development over many years including that beginning with activation on December 15th 1913 when only three officers existed within what would become Pelham’s first battalion/company providing operational support for local militia musters throughout much of 1915-1920 prior to state funding arriving which allowed full regimentation following mobilization during WWI Armistice

In 1836, General Andrew Jackson established military headquarters in what is now Pelham after his victory at New Orleans. The city's growth was based on its status as a commercial center for cotton production and its location near the Gulf of Mexico. By 1860, Pelham had become one of the most important cities in Alabama. Its economy depended on slave labor and it became an abolitionist stronghold during the Civil War. After secession, Pelham joined Confederate forces but eventually allied with Union forces. In 1865, following their capitulation, Confederate veterans were freed and helped to build up new businesses in Pelham while also restoring some old ones. Today, Pelham is home to a large number of African American families who have played a significant role in its economy since Reconstruction
In 1836, the town of Pelham was erected along aunion of two small villages in what is now Mobile County, Alabama. The town was named for General James P. Pelham, who had served in the Mexican-American War and in the American Civil War.
