Pelham is a small town in Sumter County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,500 at the 2010 census. Pelham is located on the east side of the Sumter River about 12 miles (19 km) south of Birmingham and 24 miles (37 km) north of Montgomery. The town was founded by General John Pelham during the American Civil War as a Union military outpost on the eastern bank of the river. After Confederate forces captured and burned Pelham in 1865, General Robert E. Lee moved his headquarters to nearby Moultonborough while Pelham fell to Confederate forces in 1868. In 1870, following Reconstruction efforts led by President Ulysses S. Grant, both sides agreed to cede all but 3 square miles (8 km2) of Sumter County to develop it as a free state under federal control; this area became known as "Pelham Township". A decade later, however, development resumed around Pelham due to increased trade with large cities such as Birmingham and Mobile Bayou along Interstate 35E; according to the 2000 census., there were 4,570 people living in PelHAMtownship when that census took place In recent years speculation has arisen over what will happen to downtown PelHAMtownship if Interstate 65 is extended through town into neighbouring Cullman County or even deeper into Alabama’s heartland – an issue which has caused much concern among residents and businesses who rely on access to I-65 for jobs and shopping opportunities outside of their community Singer Road West has long been one of just a few businesses open during peak hours despite its location close to I-65 & US-40 Spurlock Rd also have some limited services available during off hours

Pelham is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile metropolitan area. Pelham has been a stop on the Underground Railroad since its establishment in 1851. The community is named for General James K. Polk, who helped to make it a stop on the track system during his presidency in the late 1800s. Pelham's history began with early settlers Presbyterians who came to Alabama in 1819 seeking land nearMobile Bayou and Mound Valley Creek. They built their first cabin hereabouts in 1828 and named their new settlement for General James K. Polk, then President of the United States (1849-1853). As Ulysses S. Grant became president after Appomattox Court House ended Reconstruction in 1865, he ordered that all slaveowners must give up their slaves by January 1, 1870 or be forcibly evicted from their homes and properties without compensation or refund of value; those unable or unwilling to do so were required to leave within eight days as law required by Unionist government officials. The town name may have arisen out of an incident which took place on October 4th, 1830 when over 60 men and boys under the leadership of Amos Barton made an unauthorized excursion into what would become Pelham proper and discovered 640 acres (250 hectares) of land lying undeveloped east of Mobile Bayou just south of present-day downtown Pelham! This much cleared ground served as boundaries for future townships until they were redefined in 1903 when Mobile County was created out of parts of both Marshall and Jefferson Counties! In 1851 John Vann Woodward purchased 458 acres (220 hectares) northeastward along present-day US Highway 20 from Ebenezer Cunningham at $8 per acre ($140 USD today). At this time there were only 2 churches located hereabouts: one Presbyterian church established about 1840 by Rev John Knox Price and another African Methodist Episcopal church organized around 1865 by Rev Gadsden Epps Price also known as "Daddy" because he had raised money to purchase it from its previous owner!. In 1862 Elijah Hicks erected a steamboat landing near where US Highway 21 now intersects I-10 eastbound just north of downtown Pelham – this landing served as a stopping point for passengers loading/unloading goods bound for Mobile Harbor before continuing onward downriver via either boat or horseback ride across Buffalo Bayou! Ida Batson later added 3 more stores/shop buildings between 1861 & '67 - these buildings still stand today on Church Street just east side Of Main Street - these stores are now called "Batson's" store! At some point prior to 1913 Mrs Ida Batson moved her family & business (& 3 other families) to what is now eastern edge Of downtown Pelham & started living there permanently - this spot remains today known as Mrs Batson Place
