Pelham is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 25,101 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality north of Mobile Bay and the second most populous city east of Montgomery after Birmingham. Pelham was founded in 1836 as part of the Jackson Purchase by Nicholas-Jacques Blanchard and his brother George Washington Blanchard. It became a town in 1878 and then a city in 1906. The history of Pelham can be traced back to its founding when two brothers named Nicholas-Jacques Blanchard and George Washington Blanchard took up land grants from the state of Alabama for themselves and their families.
