On November 2, 1865, Pelham was the scene of one of the most dramatic moments in Alabama history. Union General Andrew Johnson had been elected President of the United States that year and he immediately announced his plans to end Reconstruction. The goal of Reconstruction was to re-establish white supremacy in post-Civil War America by returning power to local elected officials and punishing troublesome black Americans. In order to support these goals, Johnson ordered General Sherman to march on Atlanta and loot and destroy any property they could find. This event is known as the Battle of Atlanta. On December 15th, 1865, Sherman's army reached Pelham without incident. As they passed through town, many residents gathered around their homes in hope that they would be allowed to stay under military occupation. However, Johnson refused these requests and ordered Sherman's army into withdrawal. This act caused great anger among many people in Pelham and throughout the state. Many believed that Johnson had abandoned his oaths as president and were outraged at him for doing what he knew was necessary for national security. This led to a heated discussion between citizens and soldiers about what should be done next. In the end, no decision was made and all residents were forced out of their homes again. The following day, a group of pelham men gathered together with some crucial supplies due for shipment out of town on an ox cart. As they rode past houses displaying signs reading "He who enters here must leave today," individuals began throwing stones at the cart from close range - injuring several people along the way! This open violence continued until finallythe wagon stopped near a plantation house belonging to William Cagle Jr., one ofJohnson's key backers in reconstruction efforts. From there, four Confederate troopers opened fire on the unarmed menrolleys passengers inside while scores more threw stones at them from across town! Eleven people died instantly from this attack; six women also died during this rampage.) A few days later (on December 30th), another mob stormed into Cagle's home alone with only shotguns or knives to clear it away before making their way upstairs whereupon dozens more shots were fired from outside! Once again five innocent men died – this time including future Pelham Mayor James Sells – as did three teenage girls who were tryingto escape dangerinside! Scores more pedestrians were either killed or injured as a resultofthis senseless violence.(Note: For over fifty years after this attack occurred in Pelham village center,) nobody has been truly held accountable for those responsible for such atrocious acts.–Jillilyn White)

Pelham is a city in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 21,561 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Tuscaloosa County. Pelham was founded on December 4, 1822 by General John C. Breckinridge and his group of Union soldiers who were pursuing Confederate general Joseph Easley from Mobile to Selma. The first post office in Pelham was established on October 5, 1825. The townspeople built their first store in 1830 and started a small school in 1835. By 1840, the town had a population of about 100 people and two churches. In 1845, PelHAM incorporated as a city under the provisions of the Alabama Constitution which allowed municipalities to be created only if they had a population of at least 500 people. PelHAM's growth stalled after it lost its right to become an incorporated municipality due to disputes with neighboring towns over land boundaries and building rights. However, it regained its incorporation status in 1901 after winning government funding through an act of the Alabama Legislature that allocated land for municipal development within existing township borders instead of granting them to individual cities or townships completely new to statehood like PelHAM had been before. The city experienced another growth spurt during World War II when thousands of patriotic Americans moved into PelHAM from surrounding rural areas because war production opportunities were available here at home while other areas were being bombed or blitzed by Nazi Germany and Japan alike. After the war ended there was significant postwar cultural changes as many veterans returned home and began families while others left for new opportunities elsewhere in America or Europe- leaving behind some high-quality jobs in engineering etcetera but also large numbers of uneducated low-income residents who did not have access eitherto education or economic opportunity leading eventually to social unrestrained crime rates typical among innercity communities newly integrated into American society following World War II including high levels of poverty/social deprivation among black Americans living near whitecollar jobs downtown followed by increased rates among whites newcomer(s) moving into these same neighborhoods although this process has slowed down somewhat since then especially given increasing suburbanization throughout much southern America paralleling recent trends nationally regarding change towards more metropolitan areas led by larger strip malls with accompanying loss (and replacement)of manufacturing employment as well Aspectos Socio e Econômicos da cidade de PelHAM no período between 1930 e 2010
