Pelham's rich history and culture can be seen in its buildings, roads, and people. The first settlers in Pelham were men from New England who came to what is now Pelham in 1785. They started a small store on the banks of the Decatur River. In 1815, John Wesley settled in what is now Pelham and taught Methodism there. He also founded a school which became one of the leading schools in Alabama. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson signed an executive order creating the University of Alabama at Birmingham as the first public university in America. In 1834, Congress designated what is now Pelham as part of Mobile County for government use by providing land for a courthouse and other buildings. The surrounding area was mostly forest until cotton cultivation began replacing wild growth around 1800. During World War II, many soldiers from nearby Fort Walton Beach arrived at Pelham to fight during Operation Varsity Participation (the Battle of Northwest Africa). The town's post office opened on October 15, 1942 with three mailbags per day service; it closed on December 1st due to lack of Postal Service funding following World War II hostilities ending without any combat zones being established after Japan's surrender!
