Pelham is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Pelham post office opened in 1881 and closed in 1957. Pelham is located on State Route 31, north of Decatur and east of Huntsville. It has a total area of , making it the smallest municipality in Alabama by land area. The first permanent settler in what is now Pelham was George Hargrave, who arrived in 1837 with his family from Portsmouth, England. During the antebellum period Pelham developed as a farming community with corn crops and cattle raised for milk and hides. A sawmill was built near present day downtown Pelham around 1840 to process logs coming down the Holston River from generation to generation on the Old Tennessee Trail. By 1860 there were over 100 residents living in Pelham including some 20 families who had founded what became known as "The Five Colts." In 1865 James Fenton purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land along State Route 31 next to present day downtown Pelham from John Riggs for $2 per acre ($160/km²). This land would later become home to northeastAlabama's largest private airport – Birmingham-Hollywood International Airport (BHM).
