The Ozark Naval Air Station at Pell City was established in 1922 as a naval air station. The first squadron of F4F Wildcats, flown by Lieutenant Commander John S. Mears, arrived here on December 10, 1922. In 1924 the Naval Air Station at Pell City was renamed Norfolk Naval Air Station and then Ozark Naval Air Station on May 1, 1926. On July 12, 1942 the Navy transferred control of Norfolk to the Army and ONS Pell City became an Army base. From 1945-1948 ONS Pell City served as the home station for the Douglas C-46 Commando aircraft program. The Base was redesignated NAS Pensacola on October 20th 1948 and from 1951-1954 it served as a United States Marine Corps Base where jet fighter pilots were trained before being sent to RAF England as part of Operation Neptune's Spear during World War II. NAS Pensacola closed its doors on September 15th 1954 and all personnel were reassigned to NAS Mobile Bay Alabama untilactivated on October 15th 1955 which placed all Naval aviation activity at NAS Pensacola back in operation once again under USMC command
