The Ozark, Alabama Army Garrison was established in 1866 and has served the community faithfully ever since. The garrison is one of the oldest military installations in Alabama and is home to the 3rd Infantry Regiment which serves as the state’s only Army reserve unit. The regiment has been deployed on many occasions including two World Wars and numerous peacekeeping missions throughout the years. The 3rd Infantry Regiment was originally called “the Arkansas Guards” and served in Texas during the Mexican-American War. Afterward, it relocated to Arkansas where it fought in several battles during Reconstruction. In 1903, it was redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Regiment (Alabamian) and served in Oklahoma before being stationed at Ozark until 1929 when it was again redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Regiment (Alabama). Throughout its history, the army garrison has donated a wide variety of items and services to local residents. Many memorable donations include: a hospital tent from World War I; a monument to fallen soldiers from World War II; an ambulance from Korea; a tank from Vietnam; a radar dish from Panama; a golf cart from 1990; and so much more!
