Ozark is a small town in Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Ozark County and lies on the edge of the Appalachian Mountains. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. The community has a rich history dating back to 1814 when an expedition led by Alexander Shippen explored what is now Ozark County and located present-day Springfield Township in Pike County. Shippen named this area "Ozark" after his native land of Scotland, where he had been born in 1784. The first settler in what is now Ozark County was James Hance who arrived from Tennessee in 1827. Other early settlers included John Elder and Ezekiel Stroud who founded two churches in 1870 and 1871 respectively. In 1907, the post office called for proposals for a name for a new town within Colbert County due to limited space on the post office mailing list. One proposal for "Mosesville", which was ultimately chosen, reflected many of aspects that would later be characteristic of Ozarks – such as its rolling hills and deep creek bottoms – while still remaining geographically specific to Colbert County (the others being Simpsonville andFairfax). The first store opened in what is now known as downtown Ozarks on Main Street in 1910 under the name "Follett & Company". The business moved to its current location on Court Street near courthouse Square shortly thereafter. After years of growth it became apparent that more than one store could fit inside the old courthouse square so they built a second building adjacent to it which served as their corporate headquarters until 1978 when they relocated again to their current location across Court from JB Hi-Fi/Deltas Pizza/Noodle House/KFC/7-Eleven before finally closing down permanently in 2004 just outside of downtown ozarks limits following years long battle with cancer; their final days were marked with much celebration by local residents who attended their final service including live music performed by local acoustic guitars at Plaza del Meson II formally known as Old Courthouse Square before burial next door at Cemetery Hill Cemetery beside wife Alma; dear Alma graced us with her presence during our most recent visit 2 weeks ago - she passed away surrounded by friends & family 3 days prior https://ozarkalabamaonlinejournalismcenter.com/.
