Oxford is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,924 at the 2010 census. Oxford is located on the Mayflower River. It is part of the Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Oxford were three men who arrived on horseback from Tennessee in 1817: John Sevier, James Robertson and Daniel Boone. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Mayflower River and named it Oxford after their home state of England. The town was founded as a post office in 1827 and became a city in 1907 when it merged with nearby Marshallville to form the larger Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. Of all of Alabama's communities between Huntsville and Birmingham, only Oxford has experienced significant growth over time - its population grew by more than 20% between 2000 and 2010. This unusually rapid growth has been due largely to two factors: First, Oxford has long been an important transportation junction for both rural areas surrounding it and Tuscaloosa; second, because many people work or study nearOxford much of the day but commute into downtown during evening hours or overnight for job opportunities or education opportunities outside of their homes. The town's rich history begins with its namesake - John Sevier - who played an important role in pivotal events leading up to Alabama's admission to the Union as a state on November 15, 1792. A year later, he helped organizea group of English-speaking patriots who fought against American independence at Mobile Bayou (now Evergreen Drive). In 1818, while living in Nashville with his wife Ann Robinson (née Wood), Sevier met local woman Eliza Ann Childress (cousin [dowager] of pioneer Andrew Sinclair) while they were visiting her family near Athens; they married that same year and moved to Auburn where she attended college under Revs.. Heman Whitfield (an ordained Baptist minister) and Dr..
