In 1865, advanced political changes led to Andrew Johnson's election as President of the United States; during his term (1865-1869) new legislation was passed that opened land west of Mobile to white settlement. This created an opportunity for local farmers to sell their property east of Mobile and west of Tuskegee National Monument including much present-day Oxford. AGRICULTURE became more important than architecture in early Oxford because it took two hours to travel one mile from village center to market place despite high fences along Crockett Road which prevented prices from reaching parity with production costs in other parts of Alabama Agrarian society had been key in building social stability throughout most of southcentral Alabama since before British colonial times when large areas were divided among kinfolk based on sharecropping system where landowners received produce according to their labor productivity rather than inputs such as slaves or beeswax used by planters

Oxford, Alabama is a city in the rural Jefferson County seat of Oxford, Alabama. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County and home to many businesses, including Roberts International University and LBI Research Institute. The city is also known for its annual celebration of Oxford's "Oxford Festival." The first settlers in this area were Frenchmen who arrived in 1719 and named it after their new home town of Orléans, France. English colonists began arriving here in 1821 when General John Cushing arrived with his army from Missouri to help suppress the Seminole Indian Tribe. In 1827, General Andrew Jackson ordered all slaves brought out of Georgia into Alabama under conditions that would make them free only if they could furnish 3 years' worth of labor as farmers or servants. This forced about 200 African Americans to leave Oxford for fear that they would beenslaved like their white neighbors. In 1849, lawyer Cotton Mather organized a group called the John Marshall Society to lobby for passage of Kansas–Nebraska Act which allowed slavery within newly created Nebraska Territory without having to get approval from both Iowa and Texas; this caused an uproar among abolitionists who saw it as hypocritical because Mather himself had been a supporter of slaveholding before he became an abolitionist! During Reconstruction (1868-1877), Oxford became one of the most important black cities in America due to its large African American population and its role as a center for education and political activism. During this time, Oxford experienced great social unrest due to discrimination against African Americans by white people and local officials alike. However, despite these challenges, Oxford has remained an example for interfaith cooperation throughout U.S history
