When America gained independence from Great Britain in 1776, much of Southeast Alabama was controlled by British forces until after the Battle of Yorktown when General George Washington's army advanced southward and captured Mobile Bay Bridge forcing British troops to abandon their holdings elsewhere in SoutheastAlabama This event led to American control over most of this area including what are now present day Shelby and Colbert Counties In 1818 James Kenedy donated land northwest of White Oak to establish Academical Road which would become one half mile wide arterial road running northeast-southwest through present day Oxford ; it remains today as an important artery connecting downtown Oxford with various rural areas east and west of town . In 1830 white settlers began moving into areas vacated by British forces such as parts of current-day Auburn Hills , Hooverville (now part Of Tuscaloosa), Perdue Farms (now known as Fairhope ), New Hope , Rocky Mounts (now known as Mountain Home ) They erected homes made out of logs oredar boards nailed together with cotton twine thatched with straw or hickory branches . Many early colonists were farmers who raised crops such as corn, peas , beans , wheat and tobacco; some also engaged in cattle ranching In 1840 white settlers moved into what became Mound City following surveys that indicated there was potential for cultivation there . By 1850 Mound City had developed into an important center for business and political activity due to its location near Cahaba River where roads leading northward from Birmingham crossed it . At first Mound City functioned more like a tiny village than an incorporated community but by 1860 it had grown sufficiently to be chartered as an independent municipality under the name "Mound City" In 1865 Princeton College established itself in Mound City becoming oneofthe few colleges located within city limits As growth increased around Mound City, so did tensions between white citizens and black residents which would continue until 1971 when all public schools within city limits were integrated

Oxford, Alabama is a small town located in Marshall County, Alabama. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Oxford is one of the oldest settlements in Marshall County and has been continuously inhabited since 1827. The first post office in Oxford was established on November 16, 1827. The town developed as a cotton plantation community and became a center for education and industry after the opening of the Tennessee Valley Railroad in 1856. In 1912, Oxford incorporated as a city and remaining its residents have voted to keep their city status through 2020. The history of Oxford can be traced back to 1771 when James Robertson founded the trading post known as Fort Robertson on the Tallapoosa River across from what is now downtown Oxford. A years later, he organized an expedition led by Major John Watts to explore the area that would eventually become Marshall County. On May 25, 1775, Watts discovered what would become known as Oxford on his reconnaissance trip south from Fort Pittsburgh near today's Chattanooga. By 1800, when Marshall County was created from portions of Butler and Chickasaw counties,Oxford had already been established as a community with around 100 settlers living on land that extended eastward into modern-day Knoxville Township along Tallapoosa River. In 1827, Andrew Jackson served as president of Mississippi and passed an executive order creating Marshall County which included parts of Tuscaloosa and Decatur countiesitten by references to "the old barrier" - meaning what separates present day Marshall County from neighboring Butler county (which was then part of Alabama). At this time there were no roads or other amenities within easy reach for most people so development took place primarily through trade with surrounding states such as Georgia (via Pensacola) or Tennessee (via Chattanooga). With new arrivals came new industries including brickmaking and carpentry; these businesses soon thrived due to cheap labor available in Jacksonian America during this time period. A cotton plantation community quickly emerged around Mount Pleasant Plantation near present day Park Circle Drive/University Boulevard where white families lived off crop production while black laborers worked alongside them in Pullman Yards during leafy summer days; temperatures regularly reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit during this time period according to one resident’s recollection “No matter how much we sweated it out outside our doors – inside it felt like 109 degrees!” Interestingly enough both races enjoyed similar opportunities within society although they did not mix overtly until well into the 20th century: For example white men could vote but were required by law to attend church services every Sunday morning while black men were not given access to such privileges until after Reconstruction began following Civil War restrictions upon African Americans' civil rights following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation decreeing all slaves freed automatically without any form of compensation or auction process leading many whites throughout South Carolina & Florida Territory FREE TO GO! This initiative directly impacted local schools which benefitted greatly from increased intake because students Received free school books & uniforms NO CHARGES DUE TO THE PUBLIC AXING OF SCHOOL FEE’S AFTER LITTLE BLACK MEN WERE ALL FREE AND GOD SAID IT WAS TIME FOR THEM TO ADOWN AT HOME...It wasn't pretty folks One interesting note about those early days is that only three homes were built within 1 mile radius of Mount Pleasant Plantation - allowed by General Robert Ewell who ruled at that time over western Marshall County including current day Oxford; these houses remained unoccupied until recently due largely to lack of interest among early settlers who preferred more centralized lifestyles closer together on plantations rather than scattered throughout rural areas too far away for easy transportation
