In 1907, Opelika's first commercial building—an insurance company building—was erected at Fourth Avenue and Market Street; it has been destroyed or replaced several times since then but remains one ofOpelikas most prominent landmarks. At its peak in 1920, Opelika had a population of around 25,000 people; however, by 1930 only 10,000 remained within the city limits while 45% of their jobs were located outside its boundaries within Montgomery County proper and 60% were reported to be concentrated in central Birmingham suburbia surrounding that largest city. Opelika, Alabama is located in the Ozarks of southeastern Missouri. The town was founded in 1856 by General James K. Polk and his wife Julia Pemberton as a log settlement on the Chattahoochee River. It was named for Prussian Count Gustav von Opelika, who had come to America in 1824 to help finance the Mexican War. In 1870, when Mobile County was organized, Opelika became one of its first towns. The town's name change came about because of its location at the junction of three roads leading into Mobile Bay: US-16 (now I-10) ran through the center of town; US-19 (now US-71) crossed it from east to west; and KY-463 (now Business Loop Rd.) ran along its southern border. Opelika experienced some significant growth during World War II. Its population increased from just over 1,000 in 1940 to more than 20,000 by 1945. The city also played a role during the war in providing fuel for military vehicles and supplying food for soldiers stationed throughout Southeast Missouri and Alabama. After the war ended, Opelika's population decreased slightly but nevertheless continued to rise due to new development within its bounds and newcomers moving into the area from other parts of Missouri and Tennessee
