It is home to The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Opelika's only private university and one of the largest research universities in the Southeast. With nearly 350,000 residents, Opelika ranks as one of the largest cities inAlabama by population. The city was founded on July 4th, 1887 by Masons who named it after Prince George County, Maryland. At that time, Opelika was a small town on Mobile Bay with a population of around 30 people. However, within 5 years of its founding, Opelikans had built up an impressive infrastructure and businesses were springing up all over the area: restaurants, banks and other businesses became downtown while new homes were being constructed along Second Street. Masonry technology had not yet been invented whenOpelika was founded but this did not stop early pioneers from pursuing their dream. One such business man was John Pemberton who started manufacturing bricks for buildings in Jacksonville Florida before moving to Mobile Bay to open his own brickyard in 1892. By 1896 Pemberton had opened his first coffee shop called The Coffee House which quickly became a popular tourist spot for locals and visitors alike because of its fresh java concoctions served hot and freshly made throughout the day or evening! In 1907 Opelikan entrepreneur J C White organized a meeting with representatives from several major U S coffee companies to discuss potential production opportunities for what would become known as "Alabama Coffee". After much discussion it was decided that Alabama Coffee would be produced by two different companies – Harney & Sons Incorporated from Portland Oregon and Brown Brothers Brewing Company from Cincinnati Ohio – both subsidiaries of national conglomerate American Tobacco Company Limited (ATC). harney & Sons Incorporated produce medium quality roasts while Brown Brothers Brewing Company produces high quality Breakfast Stout Blends

Opelika, Alabama is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama and the county seat of Marshall County. The population was 21,365 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Marshall County after Hooverville. The town was founded on November 3, 1892 by Drs. John Witherspoon and Simeon Cuthbert as a small community near Mobile, Alabama to provide medical care for sick miners who were coming down from Mingo Hill Mines in nearbyMobile County. The name "Opelika" came from an old Seminole Indian word meaning "place where water comes out clear." In 1907, Opelika became known as one of the ten cities granted municipal status by then-President Theodore Roosevelt during his Bull Moose Party campaign for president that year. In 1963, Opelika annexed part of neighboring Cullman which had been its home since before it joined Marshall County. That annexation created a new city government with its own mayor and council members while maintaining many services within the original town Limits including schools, fire & police departments and even a post office still in operation today! In 1996, Opelika annexed another smaller village located just east of downtown - Beech Grove Village - giving it an official population of 11 residents when fully annexing all 4 villages into Opelika! Today's boundaries encompass 8 square miles (20 km²) with a population total estimated at over 30K!

It is the second most populous city in Mobile County after Mobile. Opelika was founded on November 3, 1885 by J.P. Morgan as a small town on what is now known as Gulf Street near Opelika Bayou in Mobile County. The area that would become Opelika was originally part of what was to be called Baldwin County, and it only became a separate municipality on July 1, 1895 when it merged withMobile County to form this much larger city today. The first settler in what would become Opelika was James Gantt who purchased 2 acres (0 hectares) of land from Captain John Tryon near present-day downtown Opelika on November 3, 1885 for $1 per acre ($=25 cents). At first there were just six people living inOpelika at the time it was founded: Gantt himself, his wife Fannie Spriggs Gantt (1860-1905), their two sons Wiley and Willis Covington (1887-1974), Jasper Witherspoon (1889-1968), John Aiken (1861-1942), George Luther Beardsley (1863-1928),and two slaves named Martha “Lila” Beardsley (born c. 1865) and Alice Beardsley(born c. 1870). The town site consisted of just a few scattered homes and barns; however soon more permanent structures began to be erected including a Methodist Episcopal Church built February 15th 1889 by Prentice Harkness which still stands today inside the original building that served as its pulpit until 1951 when its current structure replaced it; an addition to the south side of Gulf Street where business used to be conducted before becoming home to several schools; a store built onpresent day Meridian Street west of Main Street which served as lieu of jail during World War I; another store built east of Main Street which housed general stores such as those operated by Judge Augustus Collins beginning around 1880;a blacksmith shop also started up around this time along present day Court Avenue;a grist millrace dammed up bypresent day US 31 northeast of town began producing water for local farmers about 1905 while other businesses such as physician Drury & Company continued operating until moving out altogether around 1930s when electricity became available through wires coming down from Montgomery thanks to Thomas Edison;opelfka's first post office opened September 10th 1907 with five mail boxes within one block bounded northeasterly by First Avenue North, westerly by Second Avenue South, southerly by Federal Road running along present day US 301 between Opelika Bayou and GulfStreet Northwest corner opposite now called Government Center Drive Northeast corner opposite Jefferson Davis Highway Northeast corner opposite River View Boulevard Southwest corner opposite old White Settlement house now home to Business Park East Southwest corner opposite former high school now home With rapid growth came transportation needs including streetcar service donated by General Motors Corporation starting January 1st 1902 continuing until December 31st 1912 running northsouth bisecting downtown then turning eastwest across Marina Boulevard connecting downtown with rural areas beyond Limitsville via Old Marion Road southeast from limitsville thence via Old Marion Road northwest rejoining limitsville thence via Marina Boulevard southwest connecting limitville with rural areas beyond Enterprise LimitsVILLE BUSINESS PARK - This business park comprised approximately 223 acres north central section off Airport road extending into residential neighborhoods located adjacent thereto bounded easterly bordered northerly by Airport road next property line intersecting Alabamastreet West then easterly bordered southerly adjoininglimitsville home streets terminated at intersection forming southeastern edge abdominally surrounded semipermanent business park boundaries It should also be mentioned thatOpelikas annexation into new Talladega County effective dateJanuary 1st 1932 included all unincorporated portions lying outside newly annexed bounds thereby creating today's unincorporated portions lies outside Wallsboro limits southwesterly boundary formed where opelfka's eastern boundary met old white settlement house next door
