Northport is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County. Northport is on the Gulf Coast and on Mobile Bay. The town was founded by General John Custer during the American Civil War as Fort Custer, named for his regiment that fought in that conflict. In 1881, it became the terminus of the Union Pacific Railroad's Mobile–Alabama Railway Extension, making it an important railway junction in early Alabama history. The city was platted in 1871 by Fayetteville developer James Wray and named for General John Custer's regiment which had fought at Bull Run and Manassas Junction during the American Civil War. At its founding, Northport consisted of just a few buildings and consisted primarily of agricultural land west of downtown where cotton plantations were located. However, over time Northport grew rapidly due to its location along one of America's most important rail lines; traffic from nearbyMobile contributed significantly to its growth while also providing jobs for many residents. In 1881, when Mobile became part of the United States after being ceded to Spain in 1898 following Spanish-American War victory over American forces under President McKinley (the first U.S.–Spanish war), Northport became an important transportation junction on America's southern frontier because it was located adjacent to both Mobile and Pensacola ports on Mobile Bay; both cities were major centers for trade with Spanish Florida then US territory since Spain had colonized much of what is now Latin America through force or conquest centuries earlier than did any European nation including France or England who only began their colonization activities after they won control over large sections of Mexico and Puerto Rico following their respective Wars with Spain (Mexico gained independence from Spain three years after Columbus landed there seeking passage back home). One result of this commerce was rapid growth within North Port proper as well – by 1900 there were more buildings employment than people living in poverty within sight of each other! More gifts were given during the next two decades, including items such as tents and vehicles. In 1941, Marines received their first machine gun. Throughout the years, Marines have received various other gifts, such as helmets and grenades.
Northport is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. Northport was founded in 1828 by Miles Stephenson and his father-in-law, Alexander McMillan. Northport became a county seat in 1835 and has been since then. The first settlers to what would become Northport were James Crouse and John Wingate. They built a log cabin on Holmes Creek in 1828. In 1830, they moved to what is now the east side of town where they started trading with other pioneers who had arrived earlier that year from Tennessee and Georgia. In 1834, Miles Stephenson donated land to the government for courthouse square; this cleared land served as the future site of Northport's first schoolhouse which opened in 1840. In 1836, William Denny donated land for a jail; this building remains standing today as Northport's only historical landmark. In 1840, an epidemic struck Mobile (then known as Etowah) and much of southern Alabama causing great losses among its citizens; during this time period many small villages sprang up around Mobile including those near present dayMobile and within walking distance of each other such as Florence and Decaturville (now part of Montgomery). One such village was located on Holmes Creek between what are now eastside streets Seventh Avenue NW & Eighth Street NE & north side streets First Avenue NW & Second Avenue NE which became known collectively as "Holmes Creek Village". With so few homes available due to factors such as lack of timber or loggers not wanting to work theredue to high prices paid for wood elsewhere, many families pooled their resources together and built themselves simple homes made out of sticks covered with earth or grass thatched with palm fronds or reeds according to their means/abilities at the time (and often still are today). This early form of housing – called "cottages" – continued into the late 19th century when lumbering commenced along Holmes Creek adjacent to present day WParks Drive SW where many more homes were erected over time primarily due to increased demand from industry etc.; but unlike later cases where these dwellings were frequently adapted/upgraded over time thru use/the addition/remodeling/repairing of typical 21st century types thereof (i.,e., "penthouse", "condo", etc.), these cottages largely remain essentially unchanged throughout all these years notwithstanding some minor alterations either through additions/remodelings orassadements occasioned by various natural disasters like hurricanes etc.). This example will serve as an interesting case study illustrating how even though there have been numerous changes /alterations taking place during any given period resultant from both internal /external events like wars etc., albeit usually more pronounced latterly), most importantly through alteration(s) wrought upon everyday life&behavior back then simply because fewer people had access thereto = most+of+these+alterations=still+take+place=unfortunately
