The history of the Northport Gun Museum began in 1907 when a group of businessmen from the town pooled their money to purchase a gunsmithing shop. The first guns exhibited at the museum were pistols and rifles made by local blacksmiths. In 1923, the gun museum was moved to its current location on Main Street in Northport. The museum has since grown into one of the largest gun museums in America with over 100 firearms on display.

In Northport, Alabama, the history of the community stretches back to 1818. At that time, Northport was a small and unimportant outpost on the Alabama River. However, over time it grew into a thriving town with a rich cultural heritage. Today, Northport is an important stop on the Interstate 10 corridor and a popular tourist destination in its own right. The first inhabitants of Northport were Native Americans who hunted and fished in the river's estuary. In 1818, General Andrew Jackson invaded Alabama and captured Mobile Bay. As part of his campaign to retake Mobile Bay, Jackson ordered General William Troup to march westward from Mobile to take possession of Northport. The forces under Troup arrived at Northport on February 12th, 1819. They discovered that the natives had abandonment their homes and fled into the woods for safety. Troup garrisoned his men at North Port for two weeks until he received orders from Jackson to withdraw his unit back to Mobile Bay. Aftermath of this event left many Native Americans homeless and stranded on shoreline for months or even years afterwards (the events known as "The Famine"). To make up for their actions during The Famine, some of these Indians set out across country searching for new land where they could farm and live in peace; this led to what is now known as The Great Migration of Native Americans in search of freedom from Spanish rule.[1] Despite initial opposition by some residents inNorthportduetoitslocationontheAlabamaRiverandnotasimilarpopulationgrowthratesofothervillegroupsinthatyear,[2]JacksonenduredthesuccessfulraidofthestateoftheAlabama integrated all aspectsof society including educationallybasedjusticeystemsacrossalabamabecausethey disagreedwith representationby Georgiansin Congress[3]. Most blacks living within reachof white population resided near cities such as Montgomery Ala., Chattanooga Tenn., Jacksonville Fla., Richmond Va., Birmingham Ala., Memphis Tenn., Nashville Tenn., Stroudsburg Pa etc.. This process was known as Jim Crow laws which targeted black citizens living within white borders without equal opportunity through social mores such as segregation public transportation facilities limited access opportunities education rates were low due lack thereof available jobs opportunities mostly found working class whites only making ends meet while black families enjoyed significantly higher incomes thanks largely to sharecropping system whereby farmers rented land leased it back again & again yielding an annual income averaging $1,500 per year although children worked side hustles earning an average wage between $0-$5/hourLaborforce participation rates among black males peaked at 74%duringthisperiodicalethen declinedbelow 50%after1960s [4]. During Reconstruction Period various race riots took place throughout America primarily targeting colored people however little documented evidence exists about any active efforts by local law enforcement agencies against suspected Klan members or violence against African American citizens
Located on the Gulf of Mexico, Northport was founded in 1836 as a trading post by Captain George Wilkinson. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Alabama and Florida Railroad in 1849, and soon became a center for cotton production. In 1860, Northport was made the capital of the Confederate States of America due to its location on the Gulf coast. After the war, Northport experienced rapid growth as a commercial center and became a major slave-trading port. In 1880, Northport lost its status as a capital city when Birmingham replaced it. In 1960, Northport was annexed by Birmingham and became part of that city's municipality.
