It is estimated that the United States Air Force has given over 50 million gifts to civilians and military personnel throughout its history. Many Northport residents may not be familiar with this history, but the USAF Base at Northport was once home to one of America’s largest air force bases. From 1945 until 1996, Northport Airport served as the primary hub for both RAF Mildenhall and USAAF Randolph AFB. This base hosted a wide variety of aircraft including bombers, jets, transports, fighter planes and helicopters. The first time that an American civilian arrived in Northport was on November 17th 1944 when Major Harry Smith from Wichita Kansas became the first person to disembark from an RAF Lancaster bomber atNorthport Airport. It was during World War II that the USAF began providing humanitarian relief services in Europe through RAF Mildenhall. In 1945, RAF Mildenhall became operational as a United States Air Force Base after being acquired by USAAF from the British Royal Air Force. The wing operated various types of aircraft including Boeing B-29 Superfortresses and Douglas DC-3s during their lifespan at Randolph AFB which ran from 1946 until 1952. It was atRandolph AFB where General Curtis LeMay met his future wife Betty LeMay while stationed there in 1948. General LeMay later increased American nuclear weapons capability in Korea and finally assumed command of NATO forces forces in Europe before his death in 1998 aged 92 years old. In December 1951, Randolph AFB closed its doors permanently due to budget cuts within the USAF structure however it reopened under new management only two months later under the name “Northport Army Depot” until it finally closed again on October 1st 1953 citing economic reasons as cause for closure. After Randolph AFB closed its doors for good however local citizens continue to give back by hosting community events such as agricultural shows or car showings at Municipal Airport across town where many vintage planes still hang today!
