Muscle Shoals is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It was founded by white settlers in 1819 as a small community on the banks of the Muscle Shoals River. The town grew rapidly during the early 20th century, thanks to its location at the intersection of two major transportation routes: the Alabama and Georgia Railroad and the Mobile and Birmingham Railway. As a result of its growth, Muscle Shoals became an important industrial center. In 1933, it was made a city. The town's history is connected with that of its namesake river. The Muscles were a local Creek tribe that hunted deer and other game in what is now Muscle Shoals County. When white settlers moved into this area in 1819, they found no suitable land for farming. So they began construction on a small village on the riverbank, named after one of their own number – James Muscles – who had come toAlabama from Tennessee assistance his family during the American Revolution. By 1830, however, settlers had built enough dwellings to form a small town and rename it "Muscle Shoals." The first businesses inmuscle shoals opened shortly thereafter when farmers started marketing produce from their gardens and orchards nearby; prostitution soon followed suit as prostitutes roamed unencumbered by law enforcement
