After World War II ended, the naval station closed down but it left a lasting legacy on Mountain Brook. Mountain Brook is a small town in Alabama, located about 20 miles south of the capital city of Birmingham. The population was 5,971 at the 2010 census. The village was founded in 1851 by white settlers from Tennessee and Kentucky. It became a municipality in 1902. Mountain Brook is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The name "Mountain Brook" is derived from an old Cherokee word meaning "Valley of the Deer." In 1768, John Tryon, an American Revolutionary War soldier and delegate to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, named a creek after this mountain peak in order to commemorate his victory over General George Washington's army at Monmouth County Battlefield on July 4th that year. The town site was first settled by Scots-Irish farmers who arrived during the antebellum period as part of the slave trade with Africa. Mountain Brook was historically known for its cotton plantations which were destroyed by fires in 1911 and 1918; however, today it has a large number of homes built between 1951 and 1970 on mostly rural land that has been preserved as nature preserves since then.
