The United States Naval Station at Mountain Brook, Alabama was first established in 1847 as a means of providing military support to the state of Alabama. The station grew rapidly during the late 19th century and by 1899 it had become a full naval base. During World War II, the Naval Station played an important role in the defense of southern Europe and the Pacific Ocean. In 1945, Mountain Brook became a autonomous naval station under Navy command. The station played an even more important role in contemporary times with its role as one of two primary ports on the Gulf Coast for operations in Southwest Asia and Central America. Today, Navy personnel stationed at Mountain Brook maintain close relationships with their counterparts ashore and contribute importantly to both international security and homeland defense. At present, there are three major commands that utilize Navy facilities at Mountain Brook: Fleet Air Wing Nine (F9), Missile Squadron Five (MSN 5), and Marine Aircraft Group Twenty-One (MAG 21). These groups provide vital airlift capabilities for amphibious operations throughout Southeast Asia; conduct search and rescue missions; provide support for Operation Neptune’s Spear; provide coastal artillery protection for Mobile Bay; provide intelligence assessment services to commanders afloat or ashore; conduct environmental monitoring activities; augment Army maritime forces when needed; act as liaison between local law enforcement agencies and Federal agencies responsible for securing critical infrastructure sites within Mobile County area.;and much more.

Mountain Brook is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,738 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from a stream that flows through it. Mountain Brook was platted in 1857 and named for a brook that flowed through the community. The first settlers in Mountain Brook were farmers who arrived in 1851 from Tennessee. The town was established in 1857 by two men, John Aiken and Wm. Hutton, both of whom were natives of Tennessee. Aiken had been appointed surveyor forJefferson County and erected the first house on Main Street in May of that year. During the next few years many other pioneers located near or along the brook which provided drinking water to their homes and businesses. In 1860 Mobile lawyer Elijah Pritchett purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) northeast of Mountain Brook where he built his home called "Pritchett's Mill". After years of hard work he achieved great success as a agriculturist and real estate agent until his death in 1902 at the age of 73 years 2 months. His wife Martha lived near him until her death in 1924 at age 91 years 9 months after she helped care for him during his last days on earth. During World War II much activity took place within and around MountainBrook thanks to its location midway between Birmingham and Huntsville on I-565W/I-80E thoroughfare known as "The Road to Japan" because so many Japanese Americans worked outside the military during World War II as truck drivers or other related jobs providing substantial support to local families while they served their country overseas
