The National Guard in Mountain Brook, Alabama has been a part of the local community for over one hundred years. The Guardsmen have fought in every conflict since World War I, and they are currently deployed to support the military in Afghanistan. The gift history of the Guardsmen is reflective of their service to our country. The first units of the National Guard were organized on November 15, 1861 under the command of Brigadier General John McClellan. At that time, the guard consisted only of volunteers from within MountainBrook itself. In 1865, after Confederate forces captured Montgomery and forced its Mayor to resign, citizens donated 5 cannon and ammunition to the National Guard as thanks for their help during the siege. One year later, on December 12th, 1866, General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia and MountainBrook became part of Union Territory. Afterthe war ended, many members of both armies decided to stay in America instead of returning home because they wanted a chance at re-election or becoming a citizen officer with their new state government. In 1951, when Alabama was admitted into the United States as a state it activated its National Guard as an elementof its military forces. AsAlabama grew more populous and economically vibrant it needed more guardsmen to protect its citizens from crime and terrorism however no funding could be found for such an expansion so soldiers were sent home without pay during this time period Additionally Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (AROTC) officers who had completed basic training were also mobilized into units called "National Guards" which functioned much like regular army battalions but did not receive pay or benefits like Regular Army infantry battalions did.. These units served until 1991 when all AROTC officers were reassigned back into Regular army regiments once again making national guard service mandatory for all Alabamians aged 21 & over They are now being mobilized for Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF)

The Alabama National Guard was first organized on July 1, 1861. The original regiment consisted of only men from the Mountain Brook area. The unit was renamed the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment in 1864 and served in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. After the war, the regiment was disbanded and its members were transferred to other formations. In 1881, it was reactivated as a battalion of artillery in Mobile District #2 under command of Brigadier General James H. Bellamy. It served until 1898 when it reverted to battery status and again folded into Mobile District #2 after that organization's dissolution. In 1907, it was reactivated as a field artillery regiment with headquarters at Selma under command of Major General Waddrell Cobb Alexander III before being redesignated as Battery A (4th Artillery) on February 14, 1908. It remained active until 1930 when it became an infantry battalion within Mobile Division #1 stationed at Montgomery before being disbanded on November 15 that year along with all other infantry battalions within that division.
Mountain Brook is a small town in Baldwin County, Alabama, United States. The population was 699 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1868 by James and Martha Easley as a gravel pit on what is now Mountain Brook Boulevard. In 1870, the Easley family moved to the land that now forms Mountain Brook Boulevard from nearby Middletown. The first post office in Mountain Brook opened in 1872. The town’s name derived from Mount Vinson, which stands 1 mile (1 kilometer) north of the original settlement and 1/2 mile (0.8 kilometer) east of present-day Mountain Brook Boulevard. In 1881, residents voted to move to their current location on what is now Mountain Brook Boulevard because of an increase in malaria cases in surrounding towns and villages. Beginning in 1902, local businesses operated a telephone service between MountainBrook and Birmingham which continues today as Alabama Power's Rural Telephone Service."

Mountain Brook, located in the U.S. state of Alabama, was once a thriving farming community and is now known for its rich history. The area now known as Mountain Brook was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1818, Colonel John Cushing moved his family to this area from Huntsville, Alabama after becoming involved in the War of 1812. He founded what is now called Mountain Brook Academy in 1825 and built a mansion on the property which still stands today. In 1840, Mountain Brook residents voted to become a town and named it after their local stream, which they had also renamed "Mountain Brook." The town thrived until the late 1800s when new development began to take hold in nearby Huntsville and other areas. By 1900, Mountainbrook had shrunk to just a few buildings and was no longer an important factor in local politics or culture. But some of its former residents have kept alive the town's traditions and culture through various means including cultural events such as music festivals and art exhibitions.
Mountain Brook was originally a small stream in Alabama. It was named for the mountain range that covered the area at the time of its creation. In 1819, a new road was built through the area and Mountain Brook became more significant as aributary to that road. The creek continued to be used for irrigation purposes until it was diverted into Muscle Shoals River in 1942.
