Mountain Brook is a small town in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County and the largest community within Montgomery County by land area. Mountain Brook is located on the east side of Montgomery County near Interstate 65. The first permanent settler in what would become Mountain Brook was James Laughlin in 1828. In 1831, Samuel Hance established a farmstead here and built a log cabin known as Hawk's Nest which still stands today. The first post office in Montgomery County was established at Hawk's Nest in 1830, and the name of the town changed to Mountain Brook soon afterward. A major event that took place in Mountain Brook occurred on October 16, 1881 when General John Fetterman occupied Mobile from Confederate forces under Robert Ewell during the American Civil War. After Fetterman's withdrawal from Mobile on November 2nd, Union troops burned down buildings and captured many supplies including stores of cottonseed oil which became key to New Orleans' economy after Reconstruction This event helped spur development around Mountain Brook with new businesses popping up such as hardware store proprietor Jeptha Gentry's Gentry Oil Dealers (later renamed Gulf Refining) In 1916, several hundred soldiers Camp Butler were quartered here while they prepared for World War I; nearby Peachtree City received its share of military activity as well as white flight through summer 1918-19 following allegations that black Americans had conspired to overthrow white rule in south Alabama After World War II ended and African Americans regained full civil rights withinAlabama all residents were given an equal voting opportunity by law called "The Birmingham Agreement" signed December 15th 1947 . As part of this agreement numerous businesses closed their doors throughout eastern Shelby County due to competition from newly opened Blackowned businesses but over time these closures turned into more opportunities for local residents who got involved with civic life like starting their own churches or joining professional organizations
