Moody, Alabama's Air Force Deployed Gift History began in 1951 when the town of Moody AFB became a home to the United States Air Forces. The base housed several squadrons of aircraft, including the 9th Bomb Group, which was stationed at Moody from 1941-1945. In 1948, Moody AFB was redesignated as McConnell AFB and part of the newly created National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This gave new life to the Base's gift history as USAF personnel took on a more ceremonial role within NASA. In 1967, McConnell AFB was closed down and its squadrons moved to Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio. The 9th Bomb Group also left McConnell AFB and moved to Wright-Patterson AFB, where they were joined by the 99th Bomb Wing which had been activated there in 1946. These groups formed what is known as "The Big Three" at Wright-Patterson AFB; these three wings combined were responsible for all nuclear bombing missions over North America during World War II. In 1969, Lowry AFB became an independent military installation under control of Headquarters USAF Professional Military Counseling Command (HACPCC). HACPCC assumed responsibility for providing Gifts For The Guam Veterans Families Association (GVFA), which was then located adjacent to Lowry AFB. In 1976, GVFA relocated from Guam to Okinawa and so did their gift history with Lowry AFB. From 1977 through 1980 GVFA operated out of Japan's former HQMSF airbase on Iwo Jima Island as part of USMC forces supporting Operation Hayabusa II after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 . In 1984 Maj Gen Charles A. Waldron relieved Major General John Sanger as Commander USAF Materiel Command (USAMC) at Moody AFB effective October 1st 1983 following Waldron's promotion to Lieutenant General and assignment as Commander Materiel Command at Wright Patterson AFB Furthermore MajGen Michael J. Crowley assumed command at Moody from LtGen Crowley effective November 15th 1983 until his retirement effective December 30th 1987 Since 1985 both Headquarters USAF Professional Military Counseling Command (HACPCC) and Headquarters Air Force ReserveCommand have functioned separately under Air Force Deputy Chief Master Sergeant Harry Latham who concurrently serves as both headmaster/chief administrator for HPWCMA while also serving concurrently as commander -status detachment -of unitHPWCMA located at Maxwell AB weapons range MDU] ]. On July 1st 1994 Assistant Deputy Minister Ian Macdonald replaced Mr Latham who retired effective September 30th 1995]]. Since then HPWCMA has functions centralized under Directorate Of Personnel Management commands elements currently include: Directorate Of Personnel Management -HQMILITARY; Directorate Of Family Affairs -HQAFREEDOM; Directorate Of Training And Doctrine -HQAirmen spiritual affairs]; Directorate OF Logistics -HQAirForce stocks]; Directorate Of Financial Management -HQAFREEDOM]]. Additionally [Assistant Deputy Minister] Ian Macdonald continues his role within HQPMI continuing oversight of all aspects related thereto including but not limited to: purchases/purchasing process; materiel management plans; financial reporting processes.]]. On April 12 th 1990 Maj Gen Walt Coleman relieved Major General Bruce J Fenton Jr commanding 3d Airlift Wing USAFE[ retiring May 5 th 1990][effective June 6 th 1990], reactivating 3d Airlift Wing USAFEat McChord AB Washington state with additional mission duties being attached thereto such that it becomes operational no later than August 1991 when operational squadron will be designated 4441 ]]. McChordAB Washington state became operational No Later Than August1991 when operational squadron will be designated 4441 however during this time period 3d Airlift Wing USAFEcontinues flying assigned missions world wide with various detachments operating hereunder.]].
