The Montgomery Navy Yard was founded on May 1, 1851 by Rear Admiral John C. Fremont with the goal of building a navy for Alabama. The first ship to be built at theyard was the USS Alabama, which was launched on July 15, 1853. The Navy Yard continued to grow and expand throughout its years of operation, eventually becoming one of the largest naval yards in America. In 1911, the Montgomery Naval Shipyard was merged into the Navy Department's Washington Naval Shipyard and became known as the Washington Naval Shipyard Annexed to Montgomery. The Annexed Montgomery facility still operates today as a naval shipbuilding center. Throughout its history, Montgomery has been a major military center forAlabamaand has played an important role in both World War II and Korea. In 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and began World War II, Montgomery had already become one of America's most important strategic locations due to its location within easy reach of Japan's capital city Tokyo. The Army Corps of Engineers constructed two massive airfields in nearby Cullman County in order to provide fighter planes and bombers with air cover duringWWII. These fields were also used for training ground operations for American pilots during Korean War Era hostilities. During World War II, the Montgomery Naval Shipyard produced over 350 warships including submarines (including USS Ponce), destroyers (including USS Forrestal), Landing Ships Infantry (LSTs), amphibious ships (USS LSM-5) and escort carriers (CVEs). Of these vessels, more than half were completed before war ended; almost all but five were sold subsequent to hostilities ending in 1945. During wartime production attheNavy Yard%, nearly 50% of all shipbuilding jobs were filled by African Americans working under white management partners; this is significant given that most Black sailors served aboard segregated units or did not serve at all in WWII.[1] After WWII ended however, many Black sailors returned home to resumed their old jobs while their White counterparts received promotions or new assignments within their departmentsat other federal agencies
