Coffee has been a part of the Mobile community for over 100 years. In 1887, H.W. Carrigan and his wife, Lillie, opened the first coffee shop in Mobile. The Carrigans continued to serve coffee until they sold their business in 1975. In 1893, J.B. Watts opened the first gas station in Mobile and started selling gasoline and coffee from his store located on Second Street between Broadway and Rutledge Avenue (later known as Exchange Alley). Watts also served as mayor of Mobile from 1907-1911 and 1917-1919. His store was destroyed by fire in 1922 but was rebuilt with an addition that featured a cafe which still stands today on Third Street near Bayou Road (now US Highway 11). The first Starbucks Coffee shop opened inMobile on Spring Street in 2002 at 3rd & Market Streets; it was closed down by authorities after being cited for operating without a license. The history of Mobile can be traced back to 1795 when French traders set up a trading post on the bayous near what is now downtown Mobile. By 1802, they had built their first permanent fortifications, Fort Caroline. The area around modern-day Mobile was first settled by Native Americans in 600 BC. In 1699, English colonists arrived and founded Williamsburg Plantation on Black Bayou opposite modern day downtown Mobile. In 1800,Mobile became part of Alabama Territory under Governor James Knoppers. It was moved to Jackson County in 1803 following British military occupation of America during the War for Independence. In 1861, Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House and were ordered removed fromAlabama before American Civil War began. On April 12th 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant called for all Confederate troops south of Montgomery to surrender unconditionally or face total destruction by his forces including Mobile’s 1st Brigade infantry Regiment CSA commanded by Colonel John Pemberton which participated in the Battle for Montgomery that followed two days later on April 14th 1865 Fort Donelson was abandoned by Confederate General Alexander Stephens prior to its fall due to lack of food and water resources; this event marked one end point in Union victories against Confederacy throughout much of 1865 climaxing with General Robert E Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House on May 9th 1865 Aftermath: Reconstruction began with passage of the Thirteenth Amendment (1868) which granted voting rights to black people nationwide; this period also saw a rise in violence against freedmen culminating with the Ku Klux Klan's attempt to intimidate black people across America starting with lynching incidents beginning in 1915 known as 'Bloody Sunday' In 1933 leading local businessman Sam Rayburn helped found Gulf Oil Corporation and Topeka Capital Corporation; these companies played significant roles during both World Wars I and II providing munitions manufacturing jobs for soldiers along with other businesses across southeast Tennessee

At that time, coffee beans were ground and brewed as a drink to help improve alertness and Ragusa (Ruganda) women used them to ease childbirth pains. In the 15th century AD, Italian navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano discovered the islands of Juan Fernández and Islas Canaries in the Atlantic Ocean while sailing through the area now known as South America. Upon his discovery, he named these islands after his favorite beverage - Coffee Island (Juan Fernández). The Dutch began trading with Brazil in 1610 and soon realized how valuable coffee would be. They started shipping large quantities of coffee to Holland from Brazil and Africa. The first Dutch café opened in 1619 in Rotterdam. From there, Dutch traders took advantage of Brazilian slave trade to traffic coffee beans back and forth between Europe and Brazil. By the end of the 18th century, very large plantations had been built in Brazil's Amazon rainforest where coffee was grown for export to Europe. When Portugal became an independent country in 1815, it also gained control over Brazilian coffee exports which made Portugal one of world's leading producers of coffee). Portugal then began exporting its surplus product back to Europe where it was combined with other products into new drinks such as gin tonic or Madeira wine

The history of Mobile can be traced back to 1795 when it was founded by General Andrew Jackson as a military post on the Gulf Coast of Mobile Bay. In 1821, it became a town under the name of New Market. In 1836, it became an incorporated city and was renamed Mobile after founder James K. Polk's vice president, John C. Marshall. As an incorporated city, Mobile had certain rights and privileges not granted to townships or counties within Alabama until statehood in 1889. The Battle of Mobile Bay took place on December 12-13, 1846 between American forces led by Admiral David Porter and Confederate Captain Benjamin Foulke's squadron off shore from Fort Morgan in what is now Baldwin County as part of Operation Overland during the Mexican–American War. Commodore John D.'Bryant's USS Constitution (1830) fought off most of Foulke's squadron before being sunk by Confederate gunfire just east of shoreline near present day Foley Beach on December 12th; only one crewman reached safety ashore before he drowned due to exposure minutes later while swimming for cover; that fight is also famous for its capture by Federal forces resulting in Commodore Porter becoming known as "The Dragon" because he refused to give up his ship without a fight.-Athens News Journal
