The Mobile Air Force Base, home to the Alabama Air National Guard's 130th Infantry Wing, has been hosting air force deployments for more than fifty years. The wing is one of nine in the United States that are part of the Joint Chiefs of Staff's flying arm, the United States Air Force. The wing flew its first mission in World War II and since then has served in numerous conflicts, primarily in Europe and Southeast Asia. Since 2006, when fighter jets from the wing were used to support Operation Neptune's Spear—the U.S.-led military offensive against Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda network—the Wing has also deployed gift baskets full of food and supplies to needy families in Afghanistan. These gifts have become a popular tradition at Mobile AFB and have helped contribute to improved relationships between America's allies and their troubled neighbors. Gift history at Mobile AFB began with donated munitions leftover from World War I. In 1948, base commander Colonel John Sledge established a Military Department Store on Bancroft Street where citizens could purchase items such as clothing, books, cigarettes, candy bars, soap products, etc., for soldiers stationed at Mobile Bayou (now Lake Pontchartrain). In 1956base Commander General James Moseley founded an entertainment complex on Belleair Drive called "The Showplace." This was where entertainers like Benny Goodman and Bob Hope performed before troops living near the base. Over time other businesses were added including a hospital (1962), a movie theater (1967), an ice cream store (1978), a grocery store (1982) and finally an ammunition storage area in 1992 which now houses the Warrior Museum® exhibiting military equipment from around the world. Today mobile air forcebase still features many of these types of businesses along with several new additions such as a medical clinic (1998), nightlife(2002)and("Hollywood Hills") shopping mall which opened in 2009 representing one step forward for Hispanics/Latino residents who had long complained about highoverty rates within city limits while those within town limits enjoyed preferential treatment from city hall.(2009) Other recent developments at mobile include: renovation of airport taxi rank into luxury hotels complete with restaurants; initiation of construction on giant hangar that will house up to 100 planes; addition of two brand new runways making it possible for abortive takeoffs or landings without causing runway damage; construction on adjacent parking lots totaling over 1 million square feet....

Mobile, Alabama is a city in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 88,819 at the 2010 census. The Mobile–Foley Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 1,521,924. As of the 2000 US Census there were 89,535 people living in Mobile proper and its suburbs; these included 34 villages and towns located within the city limits and 20 unincorporated communities located outside of them. The total population for all nine metropolitan areas combined was 1,955,545 as of the 2010 census. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Mobile County were French colonists who built Fort Caroline on Little Pascagoula Bay on August 12th 1795 after being driven out by American forces from their native Quebec. They named their new settlement Belle Isle after Louis-Jacques DuBois (1701-1785), one of France's most distinguished patriots and an opponent of British colonialism. In 1802 the name was changed to Mobile when General James Kenedy decided to divide Alabama into three military districts under his command: Upper Florida District (in Etowah County), Middle Florida District (in Baldwin County), and Lower Alabama District (inMobile County). In 1805 the U.S. Congress created Montgomery County out of western Etowah Counties to coincide with Birmingham’s incorporation as a municipal corporation that year under legislation called “An act for organizing elections in this State” which established boroughs throughout Alabama including one for each county seat plus Washington Parish in Jefferson County which had been part of Montgomery since 1814 when it was organized as part of Lousiana Purchase lands eastward from Baton Rouge).
