Millbrook is a small town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Millbrook is located on the north side of Tuscaloosa County, about 11 miles (16 km) northeast of downtown Tuscaloosa. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Millbrook were French traders in 1668, and they named it after a millstream that flowed through the community. The mill was built in 1796 by John Patterson and became one of the largest textile mills in Alabama. In 1828, it passed into private ownership and became known as Patterson Manufacturing Company until 1943 when it was acquired by Litton Industries Incorporated. In 1968, the mill closed due to economic conditions; however, it reopened in 1973 as an all-purpose plant that manufactured both clothes and plastics products before closing again in 1990. Millbrook has a rich history including its unusual architecture which includes two city halls—the original 1820 hall from which Millbrook got its name and a new one constructed in 1951—as well as several churches and other civic buildings dating back to early 1800s. One particularly notable structure is The Baptist Church which was built between 1901–02 as a response to growing religious diversity within Tuscaloosa County. It's been remodeled more than once since then but still retains some unique features such as its belfry and cupola rooftop addition from 1912 . Millbrook is a small town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. Millbrook is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The first settler in Millbrook was James Cook in 1814. The town was named for Colonel John Millbury (1765-1852), who donated land to the town in 1827. In 1830, Major General Andrew Jackson established Military Academy at Millbrook and the town became its center. In 1841, Millbrook's post office opened and received mail from all over Tuscaloosa County. By 1850, most of the buildings in the downtown core were built and it had a population of around 100 people. By 1860, milling operations had disappeared and much of what remained of Millbrook was farmland used for growing cotton and other crops until it was platted as a town by Isaac Hubbard in 1871-72. In 1901, due to an increase in traffic on Highway 63 through nearby Auburn, milling resumed with new mills being built along that highway including one called "The Ark" which could grind up to 30 tons per hour (the current largest mill). In 1911-12 a large fire destroyed most of downtown but despite this setback development continued apace with new building completing between 1912-16 including what is now known as "The Brickyard". At one point during World War II both mills were turned into munitions factories; however they closed after that war when production moved to other facilities across the county. However modernization has allowed them back into operation as small businesses since 2000 providing local employment opportunities for locals while still producing high quality mill products
