Millbrook is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Millbrook was founded in 1881 by farmers who plowed and harvested land on the Chattahoochee River. The town began as a farm community with about thirty residents. By 1907, Millbrook had outgrown its original location and relocated to what is now known as the east end of Millbrook Cemetery. In 1951, the mill closed and many of its employees moved to nearby Decatur to continue their work at local companies such as Alcoa and Julliard Steel. One remaining section of the town retains its agricultural roots with several farms that produce vegetables, fruits and grains; these are generally operated by family members or friends of those who live there full-time. In recent years, much attention has been given to Millbrook's rich history which can be found in both its people and its place within Marshall County's culture and fabric. Among those responsible for preserving this history are members of the millworkers' union: The United Mine Workers (UMW). A number of events have taken place in Mill Brook over the past few decades that have helped promote awareness about our town's importance within Alabama society: 1) In October 2009, Mill Brook Elementary School celebrated its centennial year with a series of festivities including an open house, luncheon hour for students from first through fourth grades followed by a concert by local choir "The Big Band". 2) On October 14th & 15th 2009 an event called "A Hundred Years Ago" took place atMill Brook High School honoring those who had fought for American independence during World War II including Mr./ Mrs./ Dr.: John Ritchie (President/First Lady), Mrs./Dr.: Alice Bogan (First Sergeant/Major), Miss HSL Jones (Second Lieutenant), among others 3) On November 3rd 2009 more than 400 individuals gathered outside US Naval Base Whitstell where they presented UMW President Bob Gaynor with two historical markers recognizing his efforts in promoting national defense alongside current industrialists Rayburn Robinson Sr., Governor George Wallace III & Congressman Don Young ).

Millbrook was founded in 1881 by two farmers, John and Sarah Millbrook. The Millbrook family began the farming enterprise with a small plot of land that they cultivated for four years. In 1885, the Millbrooks added a second farm to their holdings, which became known as the White Farm. The Millbrooks continued to operate their farm until 1926 when it was sold to the Alabama Cotton Gin Company. The cotton gin company initially used mill capacity to produce finished textiles such as overalls and overallskins. However, by 1930, it had decided that its primary use would be as an engine for extracting raw cotton from the fields. Consequently, in 1930, the company purchased the White Farm and converted it into a cotton ginnery. The mill operated continuously until 1986 when it closed due to lack of business opportunity. Today, there is still evidence of what happened at the white farm during its time as a cotton ginnery. Today, you can find remnants of old machines and equipment left standing in various spots on the property. Additionally, you can visit one of the many Heritage Centers located throughout Alabama that offer tours of this important part of Alabama history.
