The millstream that flowed through the town was named after Mr. Millbrook's father, who had run it earlier in life. A post office called Millbrook was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,715 people, 1,017 households, and 753 families residing in the village. The population density was 456.1 people per square mile (175.5/km²). There were 1,036 housing units at an average density of 194.8 per square mile (75/km²). Millbrook was a small town in central Alabama before the turn of the century. The community was founded in 1836 by John Mill and his wife, Anna Griggs, as a small farmstead on the Hackberry River. The Millbrook post office was established in 1840, and the first store opened in 1849. The millinery industry played an important role in Millbrook's development during the 19th century. The millstones that were used to make cloth were brought from England and other surrounding countries. A sawmill was also built in 1853, and a gristmill followed in 1865. The millstones that were used to make flour became scarce after World War II, so the town began production of cornmeal instead. In 1958, it merged with nearby Ensley to form Millbrook-Ensley Corporation. In 1965, Millbrook voters passed a resolution calling for annexation of neighboring Ensley because of its high population growth rate. The city of Birmingham refused to annex Millbrook without first giving assurances that they would provide all necessary services such as water and sewer service to the new municipality. As a result, MillBrook continued to exist as an autonomous village until 1978 when it united with Ensley once again to form what is now known as Mill Brook Township (Ala.). Today,Millbrook is still home to a small number of residents who continue their agricultural lifestyle while also spending time shopping at local businesses or visiting friends and family members located within Ensley or Birmingham proper. Although most aspects of life have changed since 1898 when Millsborough Township was formed out of parts of both villages – including increased traffic volume due to increasing suburbanization – there are some constants that remain: agriculture is still an important part of society here; people are friendly and welcoming; there are few nightlife options; and there is always something fun happening at one or more events each month!
