Millbrook is a small town in the U.S. state of Alabama, located about 20 miles south of Birmingham and 10 miles east of Mobile. The population was 996 at the 2010 census. Millbrook is known for its milling industry, which has produced flour, cotton fabrics, paper products, and other items for many years. The first settler in Millbrook was John Whitehead in 1819. The first store opened in 1827. In 1829, the community changed its name to Millbrook after Amos Millwright donated land to make the village. In 1840, the mill began producing flour that was sold throughout the area. By 1860, it had become one of the largest mills in Alabama with 11 turbines hitting production speed. In 1865-1866, it helped produce wagons used by Union troops during the American Civil War while also making leather goods for soldiers and civilians alike. After being closed down by a fire in 1888 due to overuse, Amasa Mills reopened as an shoe manufacturing company before going bankrupt again in 1913-14. It reopened as a grocery store until 1978 when it closed completely due to economic issues once again closing doors to all customers but employees for 23 years until 2004 when it reopened as an agricultural museum with exhibits about agriculture from aroundAlabama including old grain elevator demonstrations on site alongside modern equipment still used today!
