The community retains much of its early history with businesses like the Post Office still active today including: US Steel, First National Steelmill, Grumman Aircraft Company, Allied Chemical Corporation and many more since they were founded over 100 years ago!

The first mention of Millbrook occurs in 1812 when James Stevenson noted an area between Mill Brook and Big Creek as "a good place for raising corn." By 1840, mills had been built at Mill Brook and Big Creek by settlers from Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, and other parts of the United States. In 1851 John Stephenson organized a company to build a mill on Little River about three miles east of present-day Millbrook. He named it Stephenson's Mills after himself and his brother James Stephenson Sr., who owned the land on which the mill was built. The mill operated until 1870 when it was destroyed by fire while being used as a storage depot for local farmers' crops.
In 1865–1866 Major General Jubal Early performed an experiment in agricultural production at Stephenson's Mills that led to increased cotton production in Alabama; this event is often cited as the beginning of modernAlabama agriculture.
