The Madison Naval Shipyard was a shipyard in Mobile, Alabama that served as the primary facility for the construction of Navy ships. The yard was founded in 1855 by Commodore John Rodgers and continued to be operated by the navy until 1971. There were three active yards at Mobile: the first (1855-1857) was built on land within present-day downtown Mobile, while the second (1912-1915) and third (1969-1971) were located on naval vessels docked at the destroyer pier. The last active yard at Mobile closed in 1971.

The town went through several name changes before it became Madison in 1837 when the railroad arrived in the area. The city’s history can be traced back to its founding date, which means that it has been around for nearly 230 years! In 1814, James K. Polk founded the town here after serving as a United States Senator from Florida and Acting Secretary of State under President Andrew Jackson. At first, Madison was just a small dryland settlement located on the Tallapoosa River – but it soon began to grow into what is now one of America’s most populous cities! In fact, by 1830, Madison had become an important stop on the Underground Railroad! Of course, not all of Madison’s growth came from its role as an important stop on the Underground Railroad – there were also many other businesses that started up during this time period! For example, D&H Tobacco Company opened up shop here in 1836 and helped contribute toMadison’s growing economy! Additionally, local farmers started selling crops such as cotton and corn here during this time period – makingMadison one of America’s top food producers! In addition to its booming economy –Madison also experienced some pretty significant events throughout its history! For example,in 1865 Union General Nathaniel Banks attackedand burned down part ofthe city (which later became McClellan Park!). This event led to some major changes for Madison during this time period; for example, businesses moved away from downtown towards more rural areas (!), while infrastructure (such as streets) were rebuilt or replaced entirely!. Overall, these events have definitely shaped how Madison currently looks and functions – so it definitely deserves some credit for being one of America’s oldest continuously inhabited municipalities!
