There is no question that the military has a long and proud history in Madison, Alabama. The city was founded by General Andrew Jackson in 1812 as a military outpost on the Cumberland River. The area now known as Madison was first inhabited by the Creek Nation, which was then under British control. In 1763, during the French and Indian War, American forces captured Fort Moultrie from the British. This event helped start what would become a long-standing relationship between the United States and Great Britain. The early years of Madison were filled with conflict between Native Americans and settlers. However, there was also significant development happening within the community thanks to volunteers who fought in various wars over time. One of these individuals was Colonel James McMullen, who served asMadison’s mayor from 1849 to 1850 and1861 to 1865. He is considered one of America’s most influential politicians during this time period. In 1812, General Jackson formed an army to pursue French interests in Tennessee and Kentucky. While marching through Madison on their way north, he met local officials who offered him their land for his campground near present-day downtownMadison (which he later named CampJackson). Jackson took possession of this land on July 7th, 1814 – making it one of only a few times in Ulysses S Grant’s career that he had direct ownership over property outside of Georgia/Alabama/Florida (the others being when he became President).This event is celebrated annually at ceremonies called “Jackson Day” throughout the state of Alabama! After arduous fighting against Native Americans in Louisiana and Mississippi campaigns throughout 1815-1816, General Jackson returned home to find that much of Tennessee had been gained back by North Carolina under Congressional auspices – including Nashville – which put an end to any hopes that Jackson could retake Middle Tennessee or even southeastern Kentucky (his former stomping ground). It wasn’t until January 9th, 1817 whenGeneral George Washington arrived at Nashville to assume command of all Union forces following his own resignation from office two months earlier due to health concerns – setting into motion what would become known as the Fourth Civil War! At this point in history (& for many years thereafter), General Andrew Johnson would serve as Commander-in-Chief for Union troops! During this time period numerous monumental events transpired within Madison: On November 5th & 6thof 1861 both Confederate Captured generals Alexander Stephens & Jefferson Davis were brought before Congress where they testified about treasonous activities carried out by their ARMY while stationed here;On February 14th 1902 Mayor McMullen dedicated Soldiers Monument located at corner 3rd Ave South & 4TH St NW;In 1995 Mayor Tom Bates dedicated Veterans Monument located at corner Third Ave South & 4TH St NW
